The run between Napier and Opotiki measures 356 km door to door, and a car with no queues in front of it will usually take about 4 hr 32 min. We quote that number honestly because it is measured, not guessed — but a comfortable schedule leaves room on top of it.
Distance and driving time measured on the driving route and last checked 1 September 2026. We publish measured figures only — never estimates.
Most of the distance out of Hawke's Bay is open highway rather than town driving, which is why the average speed holds up better than the map suggests.
Arriving into Bay of Plenty, the last stretch tightens up — narrower shoulders, more corners, and traffic that moves at local pace rather than highway pace.
At 356 km this is a long day in one sitting. Two proper stops rather than one keeps everybody in reasonable shape at the other end.
North Island timing is mostly about traffic rather than terrain. Leaving either side of the commuter peak is usually worth more than any shortcut.

356 km by road. That figure comes from a driving-route measurement of the actual highway distance, not a straight line across the map.
About 4 hr 32 min of driving in ordinary conditions. Holiday weekends, roadworks and stops all push that out, so we build a buffer into every booking rather than promising the fastest possible run.
Yes. Tell us where you would like to pull in when you book and the driver plans the timing around it — a lookout, a bakery, a small detour. Stops are part of the trip, not an interruption to it.
For a 4 hr 32 min drive, leaving outside the morning and late-afternoon peaks makes the biggest difference. If you are catching something at the far end, we work backwards from that time and add contingency.
We do — tell us what is coming with you when you book so the right vehicle is sent. Skis, golf clubs, surfboards and oversized cases all need a specific boot, and it is far easier to sort in advance than at the kerb.
Yes, Opotiki back to Napier can be booked at the same time, either as a set return or with an open time we confirm on the day.

We had an incredible experience with this company. We needed a last minute drive from Auckland to Coromandel. Harry is the best! He had great communication prior to our pickup, arrived early and was the kindest. He shared amazing info about other various North Island adventures. He also helped my toddlers melt down towards the end of our trip by switching to kids music! We can’t wait to book again!
Excellent hospitality and a very safe and comfortable drive. Highly recommended!
Great communication from start to finish. Recommend this company. Thank you
The terms below apply to every booking, so you know exactly where you stand before you pay.
20% deposit confirms your trip
The balance is due seven days before travel, paid securely by card. December and January travel requires a 50% deposit, because drivers are committed well ahead of the summer peak.
Cancel 7 or more days ahead
Full refund on bank transfer payments, or 97% on card payments — the 3% card processing fee is charged by the payment provider and can't be returned.
Inside 7 days
A 50% refund applies between 24 hours and 7 days before travel, less any costs already committed. Within 24 hours the fare is non-refundable, though we review every request. Date changes are considered case by case.
Weather and road closures
If a natural event, severe weather, a road closure or a government restriction stops the trip, you receive a full refund or a free reschedule.
Multi-day trips include driver accommodation, which is non-refundable once booked, and the same applies to costs already committed for remote destinations. Read the full cancellation and refund policy.
Hourly hire is only suitable when your travel starts and finishes in the same town. For a journey that ends somewhere else, book an intercity transfer or a day trip instead.
Hourly hire is only suitable when your travel starts and finishes in the same town. It is designed for local running around — meetings, shopping, medical appointments, weddings, events and sightseeing within one town — with the driver staying with you the whole time.
Book an intercity transfer or a day trip instead. Those are priced for the distance and include the driver's return leg, so a one-way journey between towns always works out simpler and usually cheaper than paying by the hour.
For pickups in Auckland and Christchurch: standard car $80 per hour, premium $110, 7 seater SUV or small van $120 and 12 seater large van $180. Everywhere else in New Zealand: standard car $95 per hour, premium $130, 7 seater SUV or small van $145 and 12 seater large van $215. Every hour includes 40 km of travel, and extra distance beyond that allowance is charged at the standard per-kilometre rate.
The minimum is 3 hours and the maximum is 24 hours in a single hourly booking. If you need a driver for several days with unlimited kilometres, contact us and we will quote a multi-day charter.
Yes. The same driver and vehicle stay with you for the whole booking, so you can leave bags in the car and move between stops without re-booking or waiting for another ride.
If no vehicle is based near your pickup point, a driver travel charge is added to cover the drive to you. The website shows it as a separate line in your quote before you pay. Tolls, parking and ferry fares are passed on at cost. Everything is shown in the quote before you pay, and the price is fixed once the booking is confirmed.
