Mount Eden address to Tauranga private car — Anya's family visit
By Harry, your driver
The early Auckland morning air was still cool, a pleasant change from the usual summer heat, as I pulled up to the Mount Eden address. It was a nice street, full of established houses with well-kept gardens. The kind of place where you knew people took pride in their homes. I checked the details on my tablet – Olivia W, from Canada, heading to Tauranga. A family visit, the booking said. That always adds a nice layer to a trip; you can feel the anticipation in the air.
The woman who emerged was friendly, with that open, easy manner you often find with Canadians. She introduced herself as Olivia W, and after a brief chat about the weather and the traffic ahead, we loaded her bags into the boot. As we pulled away from the curb, the city skyline began to shrink in the rearview mirror, a familiar and comforting sight.
Our route south is one I know like the back of my hand. We’d skirt the southern edge of Auckland, heading for the Southern Motorway, and then it’d be a straight run down to the Bombay Hills. Even on a Tuesday morning, there’s a steady flow of traffic, but nothing too bothersome. I find the drive out of Auckland quite pleasant. The urban sprawl gradually gives way to rolling hills and farmland, an immediate sign you’re transitioning into a different pace of life.
Olivia seemed relaxed, gazing out the window, taking it all in. She mentioned she'd been in Auckland for a few days visiting friends before heading down to see her sister in Tauranga. She told me about how much she enjoyed the vibrancy of the city but also appreciated the natural beauty New Zealand had to offer, even in its more populated areas. She’d spent some time exploring the Waitakere Ranges, she recounted, and was amazed by the lushness of the native bush.
As we passed through Pokeno, I pointed out the famous ice cream shop. It’s a popular stop for many, and even though it was still fairly early, she commented on how tempting it looked. We continued on, the landscape unfolding around us. Instead of turning towards Hamilton, we stayed on State Highway 2, heading east. The Waikato region is known for its dairy farming, and the green pastures dotted with cows are a constant feature. It’s a peaceful scene, and I often find myself reflecting on the beauty of the New Zealand countryside during these drives.
We picked up speed once we were past the main urban centres and on the open road. We passed through areas like Maramarua and Ngatea, towns that mark the transition towards the Bay of Plenty. Olivia was interested in the historical significance of the area, and I shared what I knew about the region, its rivers, and its connection to the people who have lived here for centuries. She mentioned that her family had a long history in Canada, and she was keen to learn more about the history of the places she visited. It’s always fulfilling when passengers show that kind of curiosity; it makes the journey more than just a transfer from A to B.
As we approached the Karangahake Gorge, the landscape began to change. The road starts to wind through the gorge, with its steep, bush-clad hills and the Ohinemuri River flowing alongside. This part of the journey always offers some spectacular views, particularly as you pass through the old gold mining areas. The vegetation becomes denser, with more native trees and ferns.
Olivia commented on the dramatic change in scenery, how different it was from the rolling hills we'd left behind. She said it reminded her a bit of some of the mountainous regions back home in Canada, but with its own unique feel. She pointed out a particularly striking vista, a wide valley stretching out below, and I agreed it was a view that never got old. I told her that this gorge often presented challenges to drivers, especially in wet weather, but on this day, the conditions were perfect – clear skies and good visibility.
As we emerged from the gorge and passed through towns like Waihi and Katikati, the signs for Tauranga started to appear. The destination was getting closer. The air began to feel different, carrying the subtle scent of the ocean, a sure sign we were nearing the coast. The landscape opened up into more coastal plains and orchards. Tauranga itself is a vibrant hub, a bustling port city with a beautiful harbour.
Olivia expressed her excitement about arriving. She was looking forward to seeing her sister and spending some quality time together. She told me about some of the things they had planned to do, including a visit to Mount Maunganui, something of a local icon. I mentioned how popular the Mount was, both with locals and tourists, for its walks and the panoramic views from the top. She seemed eager to experience it.
Pulling up to her sister's house, the end of our journey had arrived. It was a pleasant neighbourhood, much like the one we’d departed from in Auckland. Olivia thanked me, the conversation filled with expressions of gratitude for the smooth and comfortable ride. As she gathered her belongings, she mentioned how helpful it was to have a driver who knew the route so well and could offer insights along the way. She said it made the journey feel less like a long drive and more like an experience. I wished her a wonderful time with her sister and watched as she headed towards the door, a smile on her face. Another trip completed, another connection made, and another reminder of why I enjoy being a driver here in New Zealand. The destinations are diverse, the people I meet are often fascinating, and the journey itself, with all its subtle changes in landscape and atmosphere, is always an adventure.
