Mt Eden Airbnb to Mount Maunganui private car — Liam's special occasion
By Harry, your driver
The sky over Mt Eden was just starting to lighten, that soft grey-blue that promises a decent March day, when I pulled up to the Airbnb. It was one of those trendy inner-city spots, all exposed brick and potted ferns hanging from window frames. My passenger, Liam, was already waiting on the curb, a compact suitcase beside him and a crisp, light blue linen shirt perfectly pressed. He looked like he'd stepped out of a magazine, all youthful confidence and that distinctive American ease.
He was heading to Mount Maunganui for a wedding. His sister was getting married, and he was a groomsman. He'd flown into Auckland and needed a direct trip down to the Mount, no fuss. We loaded his bag into the boot, and as we pulled away from the quiet street, he settled into the back seat. He was heading to see his family, who had flown in from all over for the occasion. It’s always nice to be part of that reunion, even as an observer.
The morning traffic out of Auckland was as expected. We skirted around the edges of the city, hitting the southern motorway. Liam seemed content to watch the urban sprawl give way to farmland, the characteristic Waikato green slowly taking over. He mentioned he’d spent a few days exploring Auckland before heading south – the Sky Tower, a ferry trip to Waiheke, the usual tourist circuit. Nothing too out of the ordinary, but conducted with a quiet appreciation.
As we moved further south, past Pukekohe and onto the open road towards the Hauraki Plains, Liam started to talk a little more. He spoke about his sister’s fiancé, a New Zealander he hadn’t known all that well but seemed genuinely fond of. He was looking forward to meeting more of the groom’s family. Weddings, he mused, were always a bit of a cultural immersion, especially when it was an international affair like this one. He clearly valued those connections.
We stopped near Tirau, the corrugated iron capital, for a quick coffee. The air was fresh, carrying the faintest scent of damp earth from some overnight drizzle that had thankfully cleared. Liam grabbed a flat white and a slice of something vaguely lemony, standing outside the café watching the passing traffic. He seemed a man who enjoyed these small moments of observation, not rushing but taking it all in.
Returning to the car, the conversation drifted to his own life back in the States. He worked in tech, something about app development, but he was deliberately vague, saying he was more interested in the creative side of things these days. He spoke with a quiet passion about wanting to build things that had a tangible impact, not just abstract code. He mentioned he’d taken a few months off after a big project, hence the extended trip to New Zealand. He seemed to be in a phase of reassessment, looking for a deeper meaning in his work, perhaps even his life.
The landscape began to change as we approached the Bay of Plenty. The rolling hills became more pronounced, dotted with farms and stands of pine. Liam pointed out a particularly striking view of the Kaimai Range as we bypassed Tauranga. He’d only ever seen pictures of the Mount, and he was keen to get there before the final wedding preparations began. He seemed excited, a spark of anticipation in his eyes.
As we neared Mount Maunganui, the salty tang of the ocean started to fill the air. The traffic picked up as we entered the popular beachside town. I navigated through the streets, eventually pulling up to a large, modern house just a stone’s throw from the famous Mauao. The wedding preparations were clearly already underway – some decorations were visible on the lawn, and the general buzz of activity was palpable.
Liam gathered his bag, a sincere smile on his face. “Thanks, Harry,” he said, his voice warm with genuine gratitude. “Really appreciate the smooth ride.” He paid, and then with a final nod, he headed towards the house, the door opening to reveal a flurry of activity and welcoming faces. I watched him go, a good-looking young man, clearly eager to step into his role for the day, ready to celebrate his sister’s new chapter amidst the beautiful Tauranga sunshine. It felt like a good day to be heading towards a wedding in Mount Maunganui.
