M Social Auckland to Rotorua private car — Siti's business trip

M Social AucklandRotorua

The sun was just starting to peek over the Waitematā Harbour as I pulled up to the M Social Auckland. A sleek, modern hotel right on the waterfront. My passenger for the day, Mei L, was waiting in the lobby, looking composed and ready for the journey ahead. She explained she was in town for some business meetings and needed to get down to Rotorua. A decent enough drive, but nothing out of the ordinary for a Saturday.

We loaded her bag into the boot, a smart-looking carry-on, and she settled into the back seats. The city was still waking up, the usual Saturday morning quiet still holding sway before the weekend really kicked in. As we navigated our way out of the CBD, she mentioned she was originally from Malaysia but had been living here for a few years now. She seemed to appreciate the efficiency of the cab service, which always gives me a bit of pride in what I do. It’s not just about getting from A to B, it’s about making that journey as smooth and stress-free as possible.

The route to Rotorua usually takes me south, out of Auckland and onto the Southern Motorway. We passed through the familiar suburbs, the landscape gradually changing from urban sprawl to more open country. Pokeno, with its giant ice cream cone, always brings a smile to my face, even after all these years. It’s a classic Kiwi road trip landmark. From there, it’s a straightforward run towards Hamilton.

Mei L was quiet for a while, observing the passing scenery. The sky was a soft blue, with a few wisps of cloud adding texture. I always find that the journey out of Auckland allows people to finally unwind a bit. The city stress seems to melt away with each kilometre. She then started sharing a little about her work. She was involved in some sort of tech sector, focused on innovation and development. She explained that her company was looking to expand its reach within New Zealand, and Rotorua was a key part of that plan. It sounded fascinating, the kind of work that felt like it was shaping the future.

We stopped at Tirau, the 'Corrugated Iron Capital of the World'. It’s a quirky little town, and the corrugated iron sculptures are always a talking point. A quick leg stretch and a coffee for me, while Mei L rested her eyes for a moment. She mentioned that she found the pace of life here quite different from Malaysia, more relaxed in some ways, but also very driven in others. She appreciated the natural beauty, especially the green rolling hills that seem to stretch on forever.

Back on the road, the landscape began to change again as we got closer to Rotorua. The air started to carry a faint, familiar scent – that distinctive sulphur smell that announces your arrival in the geothermal heart of the North Island. It’s a smell you either love or hate, but I’ve grown quite accustomed to it. It signifies you’re entering a unique part of the country, unlike anywhere else.

She spoke about her initial impressions of New Zealand when she first arrived. The vast open spaces, the friendly people, the clean air. She had travelled extensively for her work before settling here and found New Zealand offered a unique blend of natural beauty and opportunity. She explained that she was particularly drawn to the strong sense of community she'd found, something she felt was perhaps less pronounced in the bustling cities she’d come from.

The approach to Rotorua itself is always interesting. You start seeing the steam rising in the distance, hinting at the geothermal activity beneath the surface. It’s an otherworldly sight, especially as the light begins to fade. I dropped her off at her destination, a modern conference centre. She thanked me for the smooth and comfortable journey, expressing her appreciation for the local insights I’d shared along the way. It’s always rewarding when a passenger feels genuinely looked after. As I drove away, I reflected on the conversation. It’s fascinating how people from different walks of life, different parts of the world, find their own connections and make their homes here. Another day, another journey, and another story shared on the road.
