Jet Park Hotel Auckland Airport to Rotorua private car — Rhys's business trip

The Jet Park Hotel at Auckland Airport on a Friday morning in January can be a bit of a circus. Lots of people rushing, suitcases bumping, the air thick with that pre-holiday buzz mixed with the sharp smell of jet fuel. My customer, Rhys, was waiting just inside the lobby, looking exactly like I’d pictured: neat, composed, a touch of that Welsh reserve about him. He was heading to Rotorua for a series of business meetings, a crucial conference for a company involved in sustainable forestry. He’d flown in from Wales the day before and the jet lag was evident, but he kept a polite distance, just offering a firm handshake and a quiet direction to Rotorua.

We loaded his single, smartly packed suitcase into the boot, and I set the GPS for State Highway 1 South. The usual crawl out of the airport precinct and onto the motorway was exactly as expected. The sun was already starting to assert itself, promising a warm day, typical for an Auckland summer. Rhys sat back, watching the landscape blur past. He had that thoughtful expression of someone used to observing. He mentioned he’d been to New Zealand once before, years ago, on a backpacking trip in his younger days. This time, though, it was all business.

As we cleared the Bombay Hills and the traffic eased, the Waikato landscape began to unfold – rolling green pastures, dairy farms, the distant shimmer of heat rising from the tarmac. We passed through Pokeno, the famous ice cream stop, and Huntly, often a gateway to discussions about rugby or local events, but Rhys remained quiet, absorbed in his own thoughts or perhaps reviewing notes on his tablet. He wasn’t a big talker, which I don’t mind at all. Some passengers prefer comfortable silence, and my job is to provide that, along with a safe and pleasant journey. I find it’s often when the quiet ones relax into the drive that they start to share little bits and pieces.

Around midday, we stopped at a service station just before Tirau. I suggested he stretch his legs. He opted for a coffee and a small meat pie from the cabinet. While he was inside, I topped up the tank and checked the tyres, a routine I never skip. When he got back into the car, he seemed a little more settled. He commented that he’d been reading up on geothermal energy and was fascinated by Rotorua’s unique geological features. He said his company was very keen on finding ways to integrate sustainable energy sources into their operations, and this conference was a big step in that direction. He told me he’d grown up in a small village in Snowdonia, where the connection to the natural landscape was paramount. He felt the same pull towards understanding and working with nature, even in a business context.

That was the most he'd spoken about himself so far. It painted a picture of where his focus lay, not just in his current business trip, but in his life. The drive from Tirau towards Rotorua became a bit more engaging. The scenery began to change, the vegetation becoming more subtropical, hints of the geothermal activity to come with the distinct smell occasionally wafting on the breeze. Rhys pointed out a stand of native bush, remarking on how important it was to preserve these pockets of untouched nature.

We arrived in Rotorua a little after 2 PM. We navigated through the town, past the steaming vents and tourist attractions, Rhys calmly directing me to his hotel. The meeting venue was right nearby. He thanked me for the smooth journey, his earlier reserve replaced by a genuine warmth. He mentioned that it was good to experience New Zealand again, and that he hoped to spend a few days exploring before flying out. As I watched him head into the hotel, I felt a sense of satisfaction. It wasn’t a trip filled with chatter, but it was one where I’d gained a quiet understanding of my passenger, a brief glimpse into the motivations behind his journey. Sometimes, the silent miles tell the most stories.
