Devonport address to Cambridge private car — Maria's holiday
By Harry, your driver
May has that crisp, cool air about it, the kind that makes you pull your jacket collar up just a little tighter, even before the sun’s fully committed to the sky. I like driving in the autumn, as the colours begin to turn. The deciduous trees put on a good show along the roads. This particular Thursday morning, the sky over Devonport was a pale, washed-out blue, promising a pleasant day but hinting at the chill that would settle in as soon as evening came.
My passenger, Maria, lived in a neat little villa overlooking the harbour. She was waiting on the footpath, a single, smart-looking suitcase at her feet, her smile a little tentative as I pulled up. She had a bright scarf around her neck, a splash of colour against her dark coat. She’d booked a few days of solo sightseeing down in the Waikato, a holiday she’d been planning for a while, she’d mentioned on the initial enquiry. “Just exploring a bit,” she’d said, but her eyes held a quiet excitement that suggested it was more than just a casual plan.
We headed south, weaving through the quiet morning streets of Devonport before joining the Southern Motorway. The goal was Cambridge, a good few hours’ drive, and Maria seemed content to just watch the cityscape give way to rolling hills and farmland. She pointed out a flock of sheep clinging to a steep embankment, her accent soft and melodic. As we cleared the city and bypassed the early congestion around the Bombay Hills, the landscape opened up. The Waikato region rolled out before us, a patchwork of green pastures, grazing cattle, and the occasional stand of pines. It’s a familiar route for me, but I always find something new to notice. Today, it was the way the mist still clung to the lower valleys, even as the sun gained strength.
We stopped for coffee and a bite at a small café just off the main highway in Tirau, the town famous for its corrugated iron buildings. Maria chose a cheese scone and a flat white, and we just took a moment before getting back on the road. She told me a little more about her life back in the Philippines, about her work in an office in Manila, and how she’d saved up specifically for this trip to New Zealand. It wasn’t her first time travelling abroad, but it was her first time here. She’d been to Australia before, but New Zealand had a different sort of quiet appeal, she felt. She spoke about missing the familiar chaos of home sometimes, the families and the constant buzz, but also relished the peace and space she found on the road, and knew she'd find in the quieter corners of the Waikato.
As we approached Cambridge, the air grew stiller, the hills softening into gentle undulations. Maria had booked a small cottage on the outskirts of town and seemed eager to settle in. She mentioned she’d heard lovely things about the local gardens and planned to spend her days wandering through them. She thanked me for the smooth ride, her earlier tentativeness replaced by a genuine warmth. I dropped her off right at the gate, her little suitcase looking small against the backdrop of the charming countryside cottage. She gave a final, bright wave as I pulled away, a solitary figure embarking on a few days of personal exploration, the crisp May air a fitting backdrop for her quiet adventure.
