Crowne Plaza Auckland to Cambridge private car — Chloe's family visit
By Harry, your driver
The early September air in Auckland still had a bite to it, a reminder that winter hadn’t quite let go its grip. The Crowne Plaza lobby was a hive of hushed activity, the usual mix of business suits and early travellers. My job was simple: find Chloe M, confirm her destination, and get her on her way south.
She was easily spotted – a little out of place amidst the polished efficiency, looking a touch lost as she checked her phone near the concourse entrance. A bright, practical jacket, a generous-sized carry-on, and that look of someone who’d been en route for a while. She’d flown in from Vancouver, a long haul, and I gathered she was heading straight down to the Waikato to see family. These family visits, especially after a long time away, always have a particular energy about them – a blend of excitement and perhaps a little nervousness, too.
We loaded her bags, and I pulled out of the city’s morning ebb. Auckland is always a bit of a dance in the early stages, navigating the different arterial routes that lead south. Bombay Hills can be a bit of a bottleneck even at the best of times, but that morning, traffic flowed reasonably well. Chloe settled back into the seat, and we drove through the familiar landscape. The greens of the rolling hills were starting to deepen, hints of autumn colour appearing in patches on the poplars and maples that lined some of the farm tracks.
I’ve always found the drive south from Auckland to be a gradual unwinding. The city recedes, the urban sprawl gives way to farmland, and the pace of life seems to naturally slow down. We passed through Pokeno, its famous ice cream shop a landmark many a traveller remembers, and then Huntly, the coal-mining history subtly present in the landscape. Chloe pointed out a particularly striking cluster of old stone farm buildings, asking about their history. I shared what I knew, mentioning they were likely built by early settlers, the kind who carved a life out of the land with sheer determination.
She mentioned she’d grown up in Toronto, and Vancouver was a recent move. Canada, she’d said, felt much further away than the miles suggested sometimes. This trip, however, was about bridging that distance. Her parents had moved to Cambridge a few years ago after retiring, and she hadn't been back to see them in person for nearly four years. She showed me a photo on her phone – a smiling older couple, clearly happy in their Waikato surroundings. It struck me then how much these journeys mean; they’re not just about covering distance, but about reconnecting.
We stopped in Hamilton for a quick coffee break. The town itself is a pleasant enough place, known for its gardens, but for me, it’s simply a waypoint on the journey south. While she stretched her legs and grabbed a quick pastry, I topped up the tank. The air was cooler here, the sky a wide expanse of pale blue tinged with grey clouds building on the horizon. A few more hours and we’d be in Cambridge. She spoke quietly about anticipating the reunion, the hugs, the shared meals, and the simple act of being in the same room again. There were no grand pronouncements, just a gentle, heartfelt anticipation that I recognised from so many other passengers heading home for significant reunions.
As we approached Cambridge, the landscape became more manicured, dotted with lifestyle blocks and then the denser housing of the town itself. The final few kilometres always feel a little different, the passenger often sitting a little straighter, a sense of arrival building. She thanked me warmly as we pulled up to her parents’ tidy home, the kind with a well-tended garden and a welcoming porch. I watched as the door opened and she was greeted with open arms, a moment of genuine human connection that made the miles I’d driven fade into insignificance. It’s a quiet satisfaction, being the one who facilitates these moments.
