Parnell address to Papamoa private car — Javier's trip
By Harry, your driver
The ute was polished up and ready by 6:30 AM on a Sunday in mid-January. Summers in Auckland always feel… expectant. Like the city's holding its breath before the real heat kicks in. Parnell, as usual, was quiet and leafy, the sort of place where houses whisper rather than shout. I pulled up outside the address, a dignified brick building tucked away behind a high hedge. I’d barely put the car in park when a man walked out. He was maybe late twenties, fair-haired, dressed in simple dark trousers and a light blue button-down shirt. He had a small, neat carry-on wheeled suitcase. He looked exactly what he was: travelling light.
He introduced himself as Javier G. He was from Spain, living there for the last few years, he explained as he settled into the passenger seat. He was heading out to Papamoa, near Tauranga, for a bit of a break. He hadn’t booked a hotel, just a vague plan to ‘see how it goes’. That’s often how the best trips start, I find. Less pressure, more discovery. We joined the steady stream of weekenders heading south out of the city, the Southern Motorway already picking up pace.
Javier was quiet for the first hour, gazing out at the passing scenery. He asked about the names of towns we passed – Bombay, Pokeno, Huntly. He seemed genuinely interested in the way people lived here, the spread of the farms, the industrial edge to some of the smaller towns. He told me he worked in software development, something about coding for ‘digital security’. He’d been in Auckland for a short conference, a work trip that had given him a few extra days to explore. He loved the natural beauty he’d seen so far, he said, but confessed a touch of weariness with the organised pace of conference life.
We stopped for coffee at a place just before Cambridge. He ordered a flat white, remarking on how coffee culture seemed to have taken root everywhere these days. While we were there, he mentioned he was an avid landscape photographer. He’d spent his spare conference time wandering around the Domain and along the waterfront, trying to capture the light. I remembered some of the shots he’d shown me on his phone – really good, capturing that peculiar Auckland glow. He was hoping for dramatic coastlines and maybe some inland light in the Bay of Plenty. I told him the road through the Karangahake Gorge offered some unique views, and he seemed keen to see it, so we made a slight detour from the main highway after Paeroa.
Driving through the gorge was a good choice. The old mining scars on the hillsides, the lazy shimmer of the Ohinemuri River, the sheer rock faces – it’s a place that’s always felt a bit raw, a bit untamed. Javier was out of the car for a good twenty minutes at one of the viewpoints, his camera working quietly and constantly. He didn’t talk much then, just absorbed the atmosphere. He said later, as we drove towards the coast, that it reminded him of parts of northern Spain, the ruggedness and the dramatic shifts in elevation, but with a distinct, almost ancient stillness. The Kaimai Range, now clearly visible, seemed to watch over us as we descended towards the coast.
As we neared Papamoa, the air changed, becoming softer, carrying the tang of salt. The sky was vast, a pale blue with a few wisps of cloud. He wasn’t heading to a specific address, just a particular stretch of beach he’d heard about. I dropped him off near the surf club, where the dunes met the road. He thanked me, his small bag in hand, and gave a genuine smile. He said it had been a perfectly smooth journey and wished me well for the rest of my day. I watched him walk towards the wide, sandy expanse, a solitary figure heading for the water. It felt like the start of something for him, a quiet adventure under the summer sun.
