Manukau address to Mount Maunganui private car — Chloe's holiday

Manukau addressTauranga & Mount Maunganui

The January sun was already beginning to beat down on Manukau when I pulled up to the address. It was a tidy place, a bit of suburban sprawl typical of the area, with manicured lawns and a sprinkler system doing its best on the recent growth. My passenger, Chloe M, was waiting on the porch, a bright suitcase by her side. She looked exactly like I'd pictured from her booking email: mid-twenties, a sun-kissed look already despite being here maybe 24 hours, and an easy smile. She was heading for Mount Maunganui, a classic summer pilgrimage for many. She mentioned she’d flown into Auckland the day before and wanted to start her New Zealand road trip without the hassle of hiring a car at the airport. Smart move, I thought.

We loaded her bags, and I got the small talk rolling as we navigated out of the suburbs and towards the Southern Motorway. She’d come from Perth, a city I’d only ever seen on a map. She was keen to see some of the North Island scenery, having heard so much about the coastlines and the volcanic landscapes. Holidays in New Zealand seemed to be a popular choice for Australians escaping their own summer heat, though she confessed it wasn't much cooler here.

The Bombay Hills always put on a bit of a show, especially on a clear day, and I pointed out the different shades of green as we climbed. Chloe seemed impressed, snapping a few photos out the window. We passed through Pokeno, the familiar scent of bacon wafting from the famous bacon-onion donut shop – tempting, but we were making good time. Onwards through Huntly and Ngaruawahia, the Waikato River eventually appearing as our travelling companion for a good stretch. The landscape was beginning to open up, wide plains dotted with sheep and cattle, the sky a vast, uninterrupted blue.

I’d planned a brief stop at a little café I knew just off the highway near Tirau, famous for its quirky corrugated iron buildings. It was a good spot to stretch the legs and grab a flat white. Chloe ordered a smoothie and admired the giant corrugation sheep art. She told me a bit more about her plans: a few days in the Mount, then maybe a detour inland. She'd always wanted to see Rotorua's geothermal activity, and perhaps Hobbiton if time allowed. It sounded like a well-rounded itinerary, a good mix of beach and culture.

The drive from Tirau towards the coast started to get more interesting. The land undulated, offering glimpses of distant farmland and then suddenly, the dense green of the Kaimai Range looming ahead. We took the Karangahake Gorge route, a stretch I always recommend when clients have the time. It’s not the fastest, but it’s spectacular. The road winds alongside the Ohinemuri River, carving its way through the steep, bush-clad hills. We passed the old mining relics, remnants of a different era. Chloe was captivated by the dramatic cliffs and the crystal-clear water, pointing out where she thought old tunnels might have been.

As we started the descent towards Tauranga, the air changed, carrying that distinct salty tang of the Pacific. The vista opened up to reveal the harbour, shimmering under the afternoon sun. Then, the iconic shape of Mauao, Mount Maunganui, rose majestically before us, its slopes a rich green against the azure sky. We drove through Mount Maunganui itself, the streets buzzing with holidaymakers. There was a real energy in the air, the kind that only comes with peak summer.

I dropped Chloe off right at her accommodation, a modern apartment building with views out towards the beach. She thanked me warmly, already looking forward to heading down to the sand. She mentioned she was travelling solo, finding her own way and soaking it all in. It’s a brave thing to do, I thought, stepping out into a new country on your own. As I drove away, back towards the highway, I reflected on the pleasant journey. It’s always satisfying to see someone like Chloe arrive at their destination, ready to embrace their holiday, having had a smooth and easy start to their adventure. The roads ahead for me were quiet, just the hum of the engine and the setting sun painting the sky in warm hues.
