Devonport address to Whangārei private car — Vishal's holiday
By Harry, your driver
The sky over Devonport was a soft, hazy grey that Monday morning, the kind where you can't quite tell where the sea ends and the clouds begin. A gentle breeze, carrying the scent of salt and something flowering from somewhere inland, rustled the leaves of the pohutukawa trees lining the street. It felt like the tail end of spring, just starting to remember summer but not quite there yet.
I pulled up to the address, a neat villa with a well-tended garden and the faint hint of someone having recently polished their shoes. Vishal emerged, a man in his late twenties, carrying a single, unassuming backpack. He had a quiet smile and eyes that seemed to take in everything without being intrusive. He was originally from Fiji, he explained as he settled into the back, heading up north for a bit of a break before diving back into his work in Auckland. He’d heard good things about the Northland coast and wanted to see it for himself.
We set off, heading back towards the Harbour Bridge. The usual Monday morning crawl through the city was already starting, a slow procession of brake lights and commuters. Vishal didn't seem bothered. He watched the urban sprawl give way to green pastures and rolling hills as we headed north. We passed through the Johnstone's Hill Tunnels, the landscape gradually opening up. Around Wellsford we encountered a small patch of roadworks, just a few guys directing traffic slowly. It wasn't anything major, but it gave us a moment to pause. I offered him a coffee from my thermos, a simple black filter brew. He accepted gratefully, his fingers warming around the cup. He told me a little about his family back in Suva, the warmth of the Fijian sun, and how he missed the easy familiarity of home, but was keen to build his own life here in New Zealand. He spoke about how Fiji had a way of… slowing you down, making you notice the small things. I thought about that as we continued north, the road stretching out ahead of us, framed by fields dotted with sheep.
Our route took us through some charming small towns. Warkworth came and went, then Brynderwyn. The air started to feel different, cleaner, with a more pronounced sea-tang. I realised we were getting closer. Vishal pointed out a hawk circling high overhead, a silent hunter in the vast blue. He’d grown up seeing birds like that, he said, but they were always tropical varieties. He was fascinated by the smaller, sharper silhouettes of the New Zealand raptors.
As we approached Whangārei, the scenery became more dramatic. The hills grew steeper, and glimpses of the rugged coastline started to appear through the trees. He was heading to a small bach he'd booked near Tutukaka, somewhere he could walk along the beaches and just… be. He mentioned he wasn't one for big cities or bustling tourist spots; he preferred quiet contemplation, the sound of the waves. I understood that. Sometimes, after a long week with plenty of faces and conversations, the quiet of the open road was exactly what I needed too.
We arrived at his accommodation just as the afternoon sun was beginning to dip lower, casting long shadows across the driveway. It was a simple, cozy-looking bach, nestled amongst native bush, with a clear view towards the ocean. He thanked me, his quiet smile returning, more relaxed now. He unloaded his small backpack, the journey complete. As I drove away, back towards the main highway heading south, I thought about Vishal, soaking in the quiet beauty of the Northland coast, finding his own little piece of New Zealand to connect with. It’s a good feeling, helping someone find that space.
