Heritage Auckland to Warkworth private car — Tiago's special occasion

The late afternoon sun was just starting to cast long shadows across Albert Street as I pulled up outside the Heritage Auckland. The lobby doors slid open, and a young man stepped out, looking a little overwhelmed by the city bustle. Tiago introduced himself, and I could tell immediately he was the sort of traveller who appreciated a bit of quiet order after navigating the urban chaos. He was heading north, all the way up to Warkworth, for a friend’s wedding.

He’d landed in Auckland that morning, having flown in from Lisbon via Dubai. A long haul, for sure. He was staying in an Airbnb nearby, just for the night before heading out to meet his friends in the countryside. He carried a small, smart suitcase and a slightly crumpled linen jacket, the kind that looks like it’s travelled much further than just a few hours on a plane. He’d picked the trip up as an Airbnb experience, looking for something more personal than a standard taxi run, and I was happy to oblige.

We joined the steady flow of traffic heading north. The motorway was busy, as it often is on a Monday afternoon, but things eased up once we cleared the Ponsonby bottleneck. Tiago pointed out the volcanic cones, naming a few as I recalled them from my geography classes. He had a keen interest in the land, an artist's eye perhaps, noticing the way the light hit the hillsides and the different textures of the green farmland. He mentioned he was a graphic designer, which explained his appreciation for the visual landscape. He told me about the light in Portugal, how it was different, softer, more golden. I found myself thinking about the colours of the vineyards back home, though I’d never been to Portugal myself.

We travelled through the familiar stretch past Silverdale, the road getting progressively more rural. The sky was a soft, hazy blue, the kind you get sometimes in early autumn when the heat of summer has broken but the cool rains haven't quite set in. Tiago seemed to relax with every kilometre we put behind us. He mentioned how weddings back home could be incredibly grand affairs, lasting for days, but this one was going to be more intimate, a celebration of friendship nestled amongst the rolling hills of the Matakana region.

He spoke a little about the friend getting married, a woman he’d met years ago during an exchange programme in London. They’d stayed in touch, mostly through social media, but he’d promised to be there for her big day. He was looking forward to seeing the vineyards and the coastline around Warkworth, places he’d only seen in photos. I suggested a quick stop at a viewpoint overlooking the Hauraki Gulf if they had time later in the week, and he smiled, saying he'd keep that in mind.

As we approached Warkworth, the landscape opened up into more agricultural land, dotted with lifestyle blocks and quiet country lanes. The air felt fresher here, carrying the scent of damp earth and distant sheep. I dropped him off at the address he’d given me, a charming, slightly old-fashioned farmhouse with a long gravel driveway. He thanked me, his initial city-dweller tension fully replaced by the anticipation of a warm reunion. I watched him walk up the drive, a solitary figure heading towards a celebration, before I turned the car around and began the drive back towards the quieter roads of Auckland, the setting sun painting the sky in soft hues of orange and pink.
