Ponsonby address to Mangawhai Heads private car — Dirk's special occasion

The morning started like many others in February – a definite buzz in the air. February in Auckland, you just know things are happening. The late summer sun was already promising a warm day as I steered the Intercity van out of my depot and headed towards Ponsonby. This wasn't your typical airport run or a standard city hop; this was a special occasion trip, all the way up to Mangawhai Heads. I always enjoy these routes. They take you out of the immediate hustle and bustle and into some of the more picturesque parts of the North Island.

The address in Ponsonby was one of those grand old villas, the kind with the wraparound verandas and perfectly manicured gardens. I pulled up just as the lady of the house was stepping onto the porch, a vision in floral. Thandiwe M. She was originally from South Africa, she'd mentioned on the booking, and you could see a certain gravitas about her, a quiet elegance. She was heading to a wedding, a significant one, and I could tell this wasn't just any wedding; this was one of those events that felt like it had been meticulously planned for months, maybe even years.

She settled into the back seat with a sigh that was more contentment than fatigue. I made a mental note to keep the journey smooth, especially on the more winding sections of the route. We started heading north, weaving through the city streets that were already starting to warm up. The usual Friday morning traffic was present, but it was manageable. My goal, as always, is to get my passengers to their destination relaxed and on time. Thandiwe seemed happy just to watch the city recede, her gaze drifting out the window.

As we cleared Auckland and joined the State Highway 1 North, the landscape began to open up. The urban sprawl gave way to rolling green hills, dotted with sheep and the occasional herd of cattle. I often find myself pointing out landmarks mentally, even if I don't voice them. You pass through Warkworth, a charming town with its bridge and river, then on towards Wellsford. It’s a familiar stretch for me, one I’ve driven countless times, but it never loses its appeal. The light filtering through the pohutukawa trees lining parts of the road, the sense of leaving the city behind – it’s a good feeling.

Thandiwe shared bits and pieces about her life, about her move to New Zealand, and about the family ties that brought her here for this wedding. She spoke of the vibrant culture she'd left behind in South Africa, the warmth of the people, the distinct flavours of the food. She explained how much she appreciated the peace and quiet she'd found in New Zealand, though she admitted she sometimes missed the sheer proximity of extended family, the constant hum of a large community close by. She’d made a good life here, she said, but sometimes a special occasion like this brought with it a wave of nostalgia.

We continued north, the road becoming slightly more agricultural, passing through areas known for their vineyards and lifestyle blocks. The air outside, even with the windows up, felt cleaner, fresher. The promise of the coast was becoming more palpable. Mangawhai Heads – it’s a name that conjures images of surf, sand, and a laid-back coastal vibe. It's a popular spot, especially in the summer months, and definitely a place where people go to celebrate and relax.

I took the turn-off for Mangawhai, and the road started to narrow, winding through more dense bush before opening up to glimpses of the sea. The final stretch leading to the Heads is always a little special. You can smell the salt on the air, hear the distant roar of the waves, and see the landscape become more rugged, more exposed to the elements. I navigated the final few kilometres, pulling up to the venue – a beautiful, modern building overlooking the water. It looked like the perfect setting for a wedding.

Thandiwe gathered her belongings, a small, elegant suitcase and a corsage box. She thanked me, her smile genuine. She said she was looking forward to seeing her family and celebrating the happy couple. As she stepped out of the van, the sea breeze caught her hair, and she turned, taking in the view one last time before heading towards the sounds of happy chatter and music. I watched her go, a touch of that South African warmth heading into a Kiwi celebration. It’s moments like these, seeing people off to significant life events in places of beauty, that make driving for Intercity Cabs so rewarding. It’s more than just a job; it's a front-row seat to life unfolding across the beautiful North Island.
