Omaha Beach to Auckland City private car — Tepaeru's family visit

By Harry, your driver

Omaha BeachAuckland City

The Tuesday morning sun was already starting to beat down as I pulled up to the little lodge overlooking Omaha Beach. It was early February, peak summer here in the North Island, and the air was thick with the smell of salt and blooming pohutukawa. My passenger, Tepora M, was waiting right by the entrance, her suitcase by her side. She had a warm, open face and a smile that crinkled the corners of her eyes. She was heading back into Auckland for a family visit, and I could tell from the excited sparkle in her eyes that she was looking forward to it.

As we set off, heading south from Omaha, the coastline gave way to rolling farmland. Omaha itself is a pretty stretch of coast, popular with Aucklanders escaping the city for the weekend or for holidays. You see a lot of nice holiday homes tucked away there. Tepora mentioned that she’d been visiting her daughter here in Omaha, a chance for some quality time before heading back to the hustle and bustle of city life. She explained that her family had strong ties to the Cook Islands, but she’d lived in Auckland for many years now. It sounded like a good balance, with the peace of the islands and the opportunities of the city.

The drive from the Omaha area towards Auckland involves navigating some local roads before joining the main highway. We skirted around the edge of the coastline for a bit, the water a dazzling blue under the clear sky, before connecting with State Highway 1. From there, it was a straightforward run south towards Auckland. We passed through Warkworth, a growing town that’s a good place to stop for a coffee or a break if you’re heading further north. We didn't stop, though, aiming straight for Auckland.

Tepora pointed out landmarks along the way, sharing little bits of local knowledge. She had a keen eye for the landscape and a genuine appreciation for the beauty of the Northland region. She told me stories about growing up in the Cook Islands, about the vibrant community spirit and the strong sense of tradition. It sounded like a world away from the busy motorways and suburban sprawl we were now entering as we got closer to Auckland.

We passed through Wellsford, another small town that serves as a gateway to the further reaches of Northland. Then it was open road again for a while, the traffic still relatively light. The sun was high in the sky now, glinting off the car’s windscreen. Tepora spoke about her children and grandchildren, her voice full of pride. She said it was important for her to be close to them, to share in their lives. She had plans for a big family lunch, she told me, her eyes lighting up at the thought. It’s always nice to hear those kinds of stories, the ones about family and connection. It reminds you what’s really important, you know?

As we approached the outskirts of Auckland, the landscape began to change. The neat fields and scattered houses started to give way to more traffic, more buildings, more signs of urban life. Even out here, north of the city, you can feel the energy of Auckland. Tepora seemed to take it all in stride, no sign of stress about the increasing traffic. She mentioned that she’d navigated Auckland’s roads for years, so it was all second nature to her.

We crossed the Harbour Bridge, a landmark I’ve crossed countless times. The views from the bridge are always spectacular, with the Waitematā Harbour stretching out on either side, dotted with sailboats. Even on a clear day like this, the city skyline rises impressively. She commented on the sheer scale of the bridge and the constant flow of vehicles, a testament to how central Auckland is to life in the North Island.

I dropped her off at her destination in the city centre. She thanked me warmly, her smile as bright as when she’d first stepped into the car. As she headed off towards her family, I felt that familiar sense of satisfaction that comes from a good day’s work. Connecting people with their loved ones, helping them navigate the roads of this beautiful country – that’s what I enjoy about being a driver for NZ Intercity Cabs.
