Park Hyatt Auckland to Taupō private car — Priya's business trip
By Harry, your driver
The Park Hyatt is always a bit of a different vibe. All brushed steel and hushed tones, you know? Makes you feel like you should be polishing your driving gloves. This Monday morning in late July, the lobby was swathed in that early winter gloom, the kind that hints at frost if you get too far from the city. My passenger, Priya S, was waiting right at the concierge desk, looking sharp. She had that immediate, purposeful air about her that screams ‘got places to be, people to see’. She’s from Melbourne, here for a conference, and I think a bit of follow-up work, hence the trek south to Taupō.
She settled into the back seat with her laptop bag, already looking like she was mentally checking off tasks. Auckland traffic on a Monday morning, even heading out of the centre, can be a bit of a beast. We eased through the usual Pokeno crawl, the big trucks rumbling past, and then things started to open up. The Waikato landscape, even under a grey sky, has a sturdy, rolling beauty to it. Lots of rich farmland, the kind that feels like it’s been shaped by generations. Priya seemed content to watch it go by, occasionally tapping away at her phone, but mostly just gazing out the window. She mentioned the conference had been intense, lots of networking and back-to-back sessions. Standard stuff for that kind of international gig.
We stopped for fuel and coffee just south of Hamilton. Standard procedure for me, this leg. A chance to stretch and let the passenger have a moment to themselves. The air was crisp, with that hint of rain that often hangs around in the Waikato during winter. When we got back in, Priya seemed a little more relaxed. She told me about her work – something in sustainable tech, a field I’m always hearing about but never quite grasp the full details of. She was passionate about it, though, speaking about the innovations her company was involved in with a quiet enthusiasm. It’s always interesting to hear what people are doing, what drives them. You meet a lot of folks in this job, and most of them are on a mission of some kind.
The drive south of Tirau really starts to smooth out. The road straightens, the hills gentle. We passed through Putaruru, still recognisable even in the low light. The rolling Waikato hills gave way to the flatter, more open plains around Tokoroa, a different kind of rural. Priya pointed out how different the landscape was from Victoria. She said Melbourne was surrounded by more rolling hills, less of this sweeping openness. As we got closer to Taupō, the air started to change again, carrying that subtle, mineral scent that you get from the geothermal areas. The first glimpses of the lake, even under the clouds, are always impressive. It’s such a vast body of water.
We pulled up to her accommodation in Taupō, a comfortable-looking place not far from the lakefront. She thanked me, a genuine smile on her face this time, the business edge softening just a touch. She mentioned she might get a chance to see the lake properly before she leaves, a small reprieve from the conference and meetings. As I watched her head inside, I thought about the shifts you see in people on these drives – the gradual shedding of the ‘work’ persona as the kilometres fall away and the destination gets closer. It’s a quiet transformation, and I’m just the guy driving the car. A simple trip, but another piece of the tapestry, you know? I turned the car around with a quiet hum, heading back towards the quiet roads, the scent of damp earth and distant pines filling the air.
