Crowne Plaza Auckland to Taupō private car — Priya's conference trip

Crowne Plaza AucklandTaupō

The late November sun, still mild enough to be pleasant, was angled low across the city as I waited outside the Crowne Plaza. Auckland was winding down for the day, traffic building predictably towards the Harbour Bridge on-ramp. My passenger, Priya R, was due to step out any minute. She was attending a tech conference in Taupō, a sector that seems to be booming in new Zealand, even this far south.

Priya emerged, a small, neat woman with an air of quiet determination, her luggage easily managed. She had a pleasant smile, and as we settled into the car, the familiar scent of hotel lobby lingering faintly, she confirmed her destination. Taupō. A few hours drive south, and the landscape would shift from urban sprawl to rolling farmland and then the wide-open spaces of the Central Plateau. I like this drive in November; the trees are still green, the days long enough, and the air has that crispness before the real summer heat kicks in.

We bypassed the worst of the afternoon rush out of the city, hitting the Southern Motorway and heading towards the Bombay Hills. Priya was mostly looking out the window, taking it all in. She’d mentioned she was from Malaysia, and I always find it interesting to see the country through fresh eyes. The Waikato region unfurled before us – Waikato means 'flowing water' in Māori, and you can see why, with the vast, rich plains and the wide, lazy river.

Our first stop was a quick one at a service station near Pokeno for fuel and a coffee. I suggested we stretch our legs. Priya bought a small local chocolate bar, and we were back on the road. The conversation, when it came, was gentle, mostly her observations about the greenery and the sheer space of it all. Back home, she said, it’s mostly high-rises and concrete, or if it's green, it's different – denser, more tropical.

As we passed through Hamilton and then Cambridge, the talk turned more personal. Priya was a software engineer, here for the conference to present some new AI platform she’d been working on. She spoke with a quiet passion about her work, about the challenges and the excitement of coding and innovation. She mentioned it was her first time in New Zealand, and she felt a little intimidated by the smaller scale of the conference compared to some of the massive international arenas she'd visited. I acknowledged that sometimes that can be a good thing, a chance to make more meaningful connections.

We took the route towards Tirau, famous for its corrugated iron corrugated iron sheep sculptures. Priya chuckled at those. The landscape began to change more noticeably as we climbed towards Taupō. The hills became rounder, the vegetation sparser in places, hinting at the volcanic landscape around the lake. The air grew cooler, and the light began to soften as the sun dipped lower.

She told me how much she appreciated the directness of the drive, the ability to get from point A to point B without multiple changes or long waits. It’s something those of us who drive these routes often take for granted. She was meeting a colleague in Taupō, and they’d booked a lakeside apartment. The idea of that quiet evening by the water, after a long day of travel and impending conference sessions, sounded appealing.

As we approached Taupō, the vast expanse of the lake itself came into view, shimmering under the fading light. It’s a spectacular sight, even after all these years. I dropped her off right at her accommodation, a modern complex overlooking the water. She thanked me, a genuine warmth in her eyes, and I could tell she was looking forward to settling in. As I drove away, the streetlights beginning to flicker on, I thought about her presentation. I hoped it went well, and that her time here in New Zealand was both productive and memorable. It’s rewarding, in its own way, to be a small part of someone’s journey, just facilitating the getting there.
