M Social Auckland to Hamilton private car — Nadia's holiday
By Harry, your driver
The March afternoon sun, soft as it can be this far into autumn, glinted off the glass towers in Auckland’s CBD. My van was parked just around the corner from the lobby of M Social, clean and ready, the engine ticking over quietly. I had a feeling this was going to be a good trip. Sometimes you just get that sense – the client’s booking details are clear, polite, no last-minute faff. Nadia P. was in Room 1203, heading for Hamilton, purely for leisure.
I waited, watching the revolving doors. A few minutes later, a woman emerged, pulling a sensible wheeled suitcase behind her. She was dressed in practical, comfortable layers, a light merino top and a good pair of walking trousers. She had a backpack slung over one shoulder, the kind that looks like it could hold a good few days’ worth of supplies. Her face was open, friendly, a scattering of freckles across her nose that the afternoon sun had probably fostered over years spent outdoors. She smiled when she saw me, a genuine, crinkling-at-the-eyes smile.
“That’ll be me,” she said, her voice clear and carrying. She handed me her key card, which I returned with a nod. “Nadia P.” We headed to the van, and I loaded her bag into the boot. As we pulled away from the kerb, navigating the gentle ballet of CBD traffic, she settled into the passenger seat. I could see the city skyline receding in the rear-view mirror, a familiar panorama I often get a good view of after picking up from the waterfront hotels.
“So, Hamilton,” I began, keeping my eyes on the road as we merged onto the motorway. “Any particular reason for the visit?”
She leaned back slightly. “Just getting away for a few days. I was in Auckland for a work conference, but I’ve always wanted to explore the Waikato a bit more. I’ve heard great things about the gardens there.”
I grunted in agreement. “The Hamilton Gardens are something else, truly. They’ve done a magnificent job managing them. You’ll enjoy that, for sure. Especially now, with the autumn colours starting to show.”
We settled into a comfortable rhythm. The motorway traffic was manageable as we headed south. The landscape began to unfurl, the sharp edges of the city softening into rolling green farmland, dotted with tufts of sheep and the occasional herd of cattle. We passed through Pokeno, a town that’s grown significantly over the past decade, and then the industrial hum of Huntly. Nadia seemed content to gaze out the window, occasionally offering a soft exclamation of appreciation for a particularly verdant valley or a dramatic sweep of clouds.
About an hour south of Auckland, as the hills began to close in a little, I spotted the familiar signage for a coffee stop. “Fancy a quick break?” I asked. “Coffee, stretch the legs?”
“Oh, that would be lovely, thank you,” she replied. “I might get a small bite too. Nothing too heavy.”
We pulled into a busy service centre. It was a typical Tuesday afternoon – families on school holidays, a few couriers grabbing a quick energy drink. I took her request for a flat white with an extra shot and a cheese scone. While she waited, she browsed a rack of local crafts, her fingers lightly tracing the patterns on a woven scarf. She spoke briefly about her home town, a small settlement near the Coromandel Peninsula, and the quiet life she led there. It sounded peaceful. She mentioned she’d always been drawn to art and design, and that exploring different garden styles was a bit of a passion project. The Hamilton Gardens, she elaborated, had a specific collection she was keen to see – the new Indian and Renaissance sections, I gathered.
Back on the road, the conversation flowed a little more easily. She talked about how much she valued these solo trips, a chance to recharge and immerse herself in something purely for her own enjoyment. She mentioned she was hoping to find some inspiration for her own small garden back home, perhaps a new plant species or a different arrangement.
As we approached Hamilton, the landscape flattened out, the characteristic wide plains of the Waikato stretching before us. The sun was starting its descent, casting long shadows across the fields. I navigated through the city streets, the traffic picking up slightly as people headed home from work.
I pulled up outside her accommodation, a modern-looking boutique hotel near the city centre. She thanked me warmly, her smile reaching her eyes again. “Thank you, Harry. That was a really pleasant drive. Very relaxing.”
“My pleasure, Nadia,” I said, retrieving her bags from the boot. “Enjoy the gardens. I’m sure you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for.”
She gave me a final wave and disappeared inside. I watched her go for a moment, imagining her tomorrow morning, strolling through those meticulously crafted gardens, perhaps discovering a new plant or a perfect design idea. It’s a quiet satisfaction, contributing in my small way to someone’s journey of discovery, even if it’s just a short trip down the road.
