Princes Wharf cruise terminal to Whangārei private car — Meilin's holiday
By Harry, your driver
The cruise ship passengers always spill out of Princes Wharf like a tide of brightly coloured confetti, a momentary disruption that adds a certain buzz to the usual Friday morning harbour quiet. It was early December, the air already thick with the promise of summer heat, and I could see her standing a little apart from the main flow, checking her phone with a slight frown. She looked younger in her holiday photos, I’d noticed during booking, but in person, there was a quiet determination about her.
Her name was Meilin Z, and she was travelling solo from Shanghai, a rare bird among the immediate family groups often disembarking. She’d booked me for a few days, a tour of Northland rather than just a point-to-point transfer. Her itinerary was ambitious: Whangārei, Paihia, maybe even Cape Reinga if the weather held. She’d emailed ahead with a few key sights she’d marked on a map, but largely, she seemed happy to let the journey unfold.
We got underway heading north, out of the city and into the familiar green sprawl of the Hibiscus Coast. Auckland traffic, even on a Friday before Christmas, was predictable. We sat through the usual crawl past the bridge and through the North Shore, the harbour glinting to our left. Meilin was quiet, her gaze fixed on the passing scenery, the houses, the boats, the bush clinging to the hillsides. It was her first time in New Zealand, she mentioned – her family were keen divers, and she’d heard the diving around the Poor Knights Islands was world-class, but she preferred staying on dry land for this trip.
I suggested a brief stop at the Puhoi Estuary. It’s a lovely spot, quiet and reflective, with a small country pub and a general store. We grabbed a flat white for me and a bottle of water for her, then wandered down to the water’s edge. The tide was out, leaving vast mudflats exposed, teeming with shorebirds. Meilin took a few photos, her phone camera moving with practiced ease. She’d mentioned she worked in graphic design, which wasn't a surprise. There was an artist’s eye in the way she framed her shots, a sensitivity to light and composition.
Back on the road, the landscape began to open up. We passed through Warkworth and then along State Highway 1, the rolling farmland giving way to more rugged coastal hills as we neared Waipu. The air changed, carrying a distinct salty tang. I pointed out the distinctive cone of Mount Manaia in the distance, a landmark that always signals our approach to Whangārei.
Her reason for this solo trip, she eventually shared, wasn’t just a holiday. She was considering a move to New Zealand, or at least spending a significant amount of time here. Her parents had retired to a small coastal town south of Shanghai, and while she loved them dearly, she craved space, quiet, and a different pace of life. She’d seen documentaries, read articles, and felt a pull towards this country. Whangārei, being a good-sized city with an airport and access to the coast, seemed like a logical place to start her exploration. She wasn’t making a decision yet, but she was gathering data, making observations, seeing if the reality matched the dream.
As we pulled up to her accommodation in Whangārei, the late afternoon sun cast long shadows. It was a neat little place near the town basin. I helped her with her luggage, a surprisingly light suitcase and a smart weekend bag. She thanked me warmly, her earlier reserve having melted away over the miles. "I will see if the city is nice," she said, a hopeful note in her voice. I wished her well for her stay and the rest of her exploration, a quiet hope that the Northland would indeed welcome her.
