Pullman Auckland to Snells Beach private car — Mei's holiday

The doorman at The Pullman Auckland gave me a nod as I pulled up, the air already thick with the promise of a warm November day. That’s when I saw her – Mei. She was standing just inside the grand lobby doors, looking a little overwhelmed by the luggage carousel spinning slowly nearby, a small suitcase at her feet. She had one of those quiet smiles that reaches the eyes, and a sense that she was taking it all in, mentally cataloguing every detail with a researcher's precision.

Mei, she introduced herself, just Mei. She was here for a holiday, a chance to see a bit more of the North Island after a whirlwind work trip that had kept her tied to the city. Her flight from Taipei had been a long one, and she was heading north, up towards the Mahurangi Peninsula, to a place called Snells Beach. It’s a route I know like the back of my hand. Through the city traffic, over the bridge, then the open road towards Orewa and the coastal highway.

As we cleared the urban sprawl, the city gradually fell away, replaced by rolling green hills dotted with sheep. The motorway gave way to smaller roads, the smell of salt and damp earth starting to mingle. Mei watched the landscape intently, her face illuminated by the sun streaming through the window. She pointed out a flock of gulls wheeling over a paddocks, then a particularly vibrant patch of pohutukawa trees beginning to bloom, their fiery red flowers a sure sign of summer's approach. She told me, in that same quiet way, how much she enjoyed the drive, how different it was from the organised transport of her usual business travels. This was about discovery, she explained, about seeing the country at her own pace.

We stopped at a small café in Warkworth, the kind of place with mismatched chairs and the scent of baking wafting through the door. While Mei ordered a flat white and a slice of ANZAC biscuit, I topped up the tank. She returned to the car with a small notebook and a pen, already sketching something. When I asked what it was, she showed me a quick, delicate drawing of the café's flower boxes. She’d lived in Taipei for years, she mentioned, a city that had everything, but sometimes you craved the natural light, the space, something more… organic. Snells Beach, she’d heard, had a beautiful coastline, perfect for quiet walks.

The final stretch of road wound its way through a mix of lush farmland and pockets of native bush. The ocean appeared in glimpses to the east, a vast expanse of blue meeting the horizon. As we approached Snells Beach, the houses became more scattered, nestled into the hillsides. The air grew breezier, carrying the unmistakable tang of the sea. Mei’s eyes scanned the vista, a subtle shift from quiet observation to something more akin to anticipation. She told me she’d read about the shell-covered beaches, the relaxed pace of life – a stark contrast to the high-stakes environment she usually navigated.

Pulling up to her accommodation, a charming bach overlooking the water, she thanked me warmly. She had a full week ahead, she said, no plans beyond walking, reading, and enjoying the quiet. As she gathered her small suitcase, she turned back, her smile a little brighter now. "Thank you, Harry. For the drive, and for the scenery." It’s moments like these, I thought, watching her head towards her temporary seaside haven, that remind me why I love this job. The steady hum of the engine, the unfolding countryside, and the quiet unfolding of a passenger's story, one mile at a time.
