Botany address to Auckland Airport private car — Mei's holiday
By Harry, your driver
The call came through late the day before, a booking for an airport run out of Botany. A private residence, so I’d be pulling up to a house, not a hotel. The date was June 24th, which meant mid-winter. The kind of quiet time for us drivers, generally, after the summer rush and before the Christmas chaos. Auckland in June can be a bit grim – grey skies, damp, sometimes a biting southerly wind cutting through the city. I remember thinking it’s the kind of weather that makes people want to escape, either to somewhere warmer or just somewhere completely different. As it turned out, my passenger was doing exactly that.
When I arrived at the Botany address, a neat suburban house with a well-tended garden that looked a little tired in the winter light, Mei L was waiting by the door. She looked younger than I’d expected, maybe late twenties, with a bright, observant gaze. She had a single, smart-looking suitcase beside her. It suggested a trip designed for efficiency rather than hauling much. She spoke English with a soft accent, clear and unhurried, and introduced herself with a polite nod. Her flight was in the afternoon, so we had a comfortable amount of time.
The journey from Botany to Auckland Airport is usually straightforward, unless there’s a major event or an unexpected bottleneck on the Southern Motorway. I started our drive heading west, then south, navigating the familiar suburban sprawl giving way to the busier arterial routes. Mei L was quiet initially, gazing out the window, taking in the blur of houses, shops, and the occasional patch of green. I could see the city’s winter coat on display – the damp roads, the muted colours, the occasional tree losing its leaves. It’s not the most scenic stretch of road, but it’s efficient.
As we got closer to the airport, the conversation started to flow more naturally. Mei L mentioned she’d been living in Auckland for a year, working in IT. She’d come over for the experience, and while she liked the country, she’d found it a bit isolating at times. The long hours at work hadn’t left much time for exploring, and the winter weather certainly hadn’t helped. This trip, though, was about changing that. She was flying north, heading up to the Bay of Islands for a week of actual holiday. She’d booked a small cottage near Paihia and was planning to explore the beaches, take a ferry across to Russell, and just generally soak up some sun and scenery.
She described her plans with growing enthusiasm. She’d done her research, looking at photos online of the turquoise water and the lush greenery, a stark contrast to the grey Auckland skies we were currently under. She’d even learned a few Māori phrases from a language app, which she practiced quietly on her phone. It was a small thing, but it struck me as a lovely gesture of respect for the country she’d chosen to visit.
We talked a little more about New Zealand. She hadn’t been to many places beyond Auckland, mentioning a short trip to Rotorua last year that had been more about geothermal activity than relaxation. She was particularly excited about the marine life she hoped to see up north – dolphins, maybe even whales if she was lucky. She spoke with a quiet joy about the prospect of breathing fresh sea air and seeing a different side of Aotearoa.
As we pulled up to the departures terminal, the winter sun was just beginning to break through the clouds, casting a pale, hopeful light. Mei L thanked me, her smile genuine and warm. She picked up her suitcase, ready to head into the adventure she’d meticulously planned. Watching her walk away, a small figure against the massive airport backdrop, I felt a quiet satisfaction. It’s not always about the grand destinations; sometimes, it's about the simple, restorative journey, the moment when someone decides to break free from the routine and chase a bit of sunshine, even in the middle of winter. I wished her a good trip, a sentiment I often voice internally for my passengers, as I turned the car around, heading back into the city's quiet mid-week hum.
