Sofitel Auckland Viaduct to Auckland Airport private car — Mateo's family visit

By Harry, your driver

Sofitel Auckland ViaductAuckland Airport

The grey sky over the Viaduct Harbour was the colour of a freshly laundered duvet cover. Tucked away in the Sofitel, the quiet opulence seemed a world away from the usual scramble of airport runs. My passenger, Mateo, was due at nine. He emerged precisely on time, a man in his late twenties, carrying a single, well-worn backpack that suggested a traveler less concerned with appearances and more with experience. He wore a neat grey jacket over a simple dark shirt, his eyes sharp and curious. He’d flown in from Santiago a couple of days ago, he mentioned, to visit his sister who had been living in Auckland for the past five years. This was his first time in New Zealand.

He’d been staying in a hotel downtown, and this was just a quick trip out to the airport to catch his flight back, after which he was heading straight across the Tasman to Melbourne for a work conference. A packed schedule, but he seemed unhurried. As we pulled away from the glittering waterfront and joined the stream of traffic heading south, he looked out the window, absorbing the cityscape as it dissolved into the familiar sprawl. He spoke a little about his work – architecture, he’d trained in a firm in Valparaíso, a city he described with genuine affection, highlighting its steep hills, colourful houses, and vibrant arts scene. He said Auckland reminded him a little of parts of Santiago, the hills and the harbour, but it was much quieter, more orderly in its own way.

The southern motorway opened up, and the landscape began to shift. We bypassed the usual Pukekohe traffic lights, heading straight down State Highway 1. Rain had been forecast, but so far only a fine mist hung in the air, making the green hillsides slick and gleaming. Mateo pointed out a hawk circling high above the fields, a common sight for him back home, he said. He’d grown up near the Andean foothills, and the open spaces always drew his attention. He told me how his sister had tried to get him to stay longer, to explore the North Island beyond Auckland, but the tight schedule meant he’d only managed a couple of day trips, a visit to Waiheke Island and a drive out towards the west coast beaches. He seemed to have seen just enough to leave him wanting more.

As we approached the airport interchange, the road grew busier. Signs for domestic and international terminals flashed past. I navigated towards the arrivals area for international departures, the hum of the city fading as we entered the designated pick-up zone. Mateo thanked me, a genuine warmth in his voice. He retrieved his backpack, and with a final, appreciative glance at the sky, he headed towards the terminal building. Another journey completed, another story held briefly in the quiet space of the car. I watched him go, a solitary figure disappearing into the crowds, carrying his memories of Auckland and the promise of future explorations, perhaps back to the colourful streets of Valparaíso or the rugged beauty of his homeland. It’s always a privilege, I find, to be a small part of someone’s journey, even just for a few hours on the road.
