Auckland Rose Park Hotel to Auckland Airport private car — Linh's family visit

The late February sun was already warming the tarmac as I pulled up to the Rose Park Hotel in Parnell. It was a Sunday, and the air had that relaxed, end-of-weekend hum to it. I checked the name on the booking one more time – Linh N. Coming back from a family visit, all packed up and ready to head to the airport. I’d driven her out to the North Shore a few days prior to see her siblings, a quick overnight trip that felt more like a leisurely extended family brunch. Now, it was the reverse journey, the quiet winding down before the big flight.

Linh emerged from the hotel lobby looking a little wistful, clutching a small, worn teddy bear. She gave me a shy smile and a nod towards the boot, indicating where her suitcase, a surprisingly compact, dark navy model, should go. She settled into the back seat, the teddy bear perched carefully on the empty seat beside her. “Going home?” I asked, just to break the silence. She nodded, “Yes, today.” It wasn’t a long journey, just across the harbour and down to the airport, but the quiet contemplation of someone leaving loved ones behind always carries a certain weight.

We bypassed the usual Sunday traffic snarls on Gladstone Road, heading straight onto the Southern Motorway. The harbour bridge was clear this time of day, a welcome sight. As we merged onto the motorway heading south, Linh looked out the window, her gaze drifting over the city skyline receding behind us. The teddy bear seemed to be her silent companion, a tangible link to the family she’d just spent time with.

She mentioned, quite softly, that this trip was her first time back in Auckland in over four years. The world had felt so small and distant for so long, and it seemed that seeing her family, even for a short while, had been a much-needed anchor. She spoke a little about her parents, her sister and her brother-in-law, the way children’s laughter filled their home again. It wasn’t a flood of conversation, more like gentle observations shared between moments of watching the passing scenery. We passed the familiar landmarks of the city's southern suburbs, the dense urban sprawl giving way to more open spaces. The sky was a vast, uninterrupted blue, a perfect contrast to the slightly melancholic mood.

I remember seeing large trucks, plenty of them, still keeping the Sunday freight convoys moving. There was the usual cluster of cars heading for weekend getaways or trips back home themselves. It’s a different rhythm on a Sunday afternoon – a bit more of a hum, a bit less of a frantic rush. Linh pointed out a particularly vibrant pohutukawa tree near Manukau, its branches heavy with green leaves, soon to be bursting with its iconic red flowers. She said it reminded her of the trees back home, though the climate was obviously different.

As we approached the airport, the energy in the car shifted. The gentle wistfulness gave way to a more practical, focused air. She gathered her handbag, a final glance at the teddy bear. “Thank you, Harry,” she said, her voice a little brighter now. “It was a good visit.”

I helped her with her suitcase at the departures area. The air was already thick with the sounds of travellers – rolling bags, muffled announcements, the general buzz of departure. She gave the teddy bear a small pat before placing it carefully back into her handbag. With a final smile and a nod, Linh N walked into the terminal, a quiet figure heading towards her next journey, carrying with her the warmth of family and the promise of return. I watched her go for a moment, then turned the car back towards the city, the empty back seat a silent reminder of the many stories that travel through the back of my cabs.
