Grand Mercure Auckland to Auckland Airport private car — Liam's family visit
By Harry, your driver
The light outside the Grand Mercure was that pale, watery grey that Auckland gets sometimes in late May. Not quite raining, not quite sunny, just sort of… existing. I pulled up and noted my passenger was already waiting near the lobby doors, a man who looked a bit overwhelmed by the sheer size of his suitcase. He was mid-thirties, I’d guess, with that easygoing look Australians often have, even when they’re carrying what looked like the entire contents of a small flat.
He’d booked a transfer from the hotel to the airport, a pretty standard run. He’d flown in from Melbourne the day before, a quick business trip, and was now heading home. He introduced himself as Liam and mentioned he was meeting his parents in Sydney, who were visiting from the UK. He had a few hours to kill before his flight, so he was just getting himself organised. I took his case – it really was a monster – and stowed it in the boot, then showed him into the back of the cab. The usual quick chat about the flight, the weather, how long he’d been in Auckland. He’d only been in for 24 hours, just the one meeting. He seemed a little tired, but there was a definite buzz about him, that feeling of heading home.
We joined the flow towards the motorway, and the city skyline receded behind us. Liam seemed content to just watch it go. He’d brought a book, but he didn’t open it. Instead, he rested his head back and closed his eyes for a bit. I resisted the urge to chat too much, knowing some people just want the quiet at the start of a trip, especially after business. The traffic on the Southern Motorway was moderate for a Thursday afternoon, a few trucks, the usual mix of Auckland commuters heading home early. We passed the turn-off for Manukau, the landscape a familiar blend of urban sprawl giving way to more open spaces, the trees starting to show their autumn colours against the green pastures.
He eventually opened his eyes and commented on the scenery. He’d been to New Zealand a few times before, he said, mostly for holidays with his family when he was younger. He remembered a camping trip up north, near the Coromandel, and something about a beach with black sand. He spoke fondly of those trips, the freedom of it all. He mentioned his sister, who lived over here in Auckland for a while, which is why he’d chosen the Grand Mercure – close to where she used to stay. She’d moved back to Australia herself a couple of years ago. The conversation drifted to family life, the inevitable gathering for his parents’ visit, the organised chaos of siblings coordinating their plans. He spoke about them with a warmth that was easy to hear. Not forced, just genuine affection. He said his parents were getting on a bit, and he liked to make sure he caught up with them whenever he could, especially now they were retired and travelling more themselves. He was looking forward to hearing about their latest adventures; they’d just been to Sicily.
As we got closer to the airport, the conversation naturally quietened down again. The signs for the terminals appeared, and the traffic thickened up once more, the familiar airport bustle starting to build. Liam was already gathering his things, his earlier tiredness replaced by a quiet anticipation. He paid electronically, thanked me for the smooth ride, and then, with a nod and a friendly smile, he hoisted his formidable suitcase and headed towards the departures hall, just another traveller embarking on the next leg of their journey. I watched him go for a moment before turning the car and heading back towards the city, thinking about that easy warmth, the simple pleasure he seemed to take in just heading home to his people.
