Remuera address to Palmerston North private car — Léa's special occasion
By Harry, your driver
The December heat was really starting to bite as I rolled into Remuera that Tuesday morning. Even at 9 AM, the air had that thick, syrupy quality that only Auckland in late summer can produce. My usual route past the Domain was less a scenic start and more a reminder to crank the air con. I turned onto the quiet street, trees forming a dappled canopy, and pulled up to a large, elegant house that looked like it had been there for decades, solid and unpretentious.
My passenger, Léa D, was waiting on the porch. She was younger than I'd expected, probably mid-twenties, with a warm smile and an easygoing air. She had a single, smart-looking suitcase beside her. Her accent, faintly French but with a tropical lilt, told me she was from New Caledonia, as her booking had indicated. She was heading down to Palmerston North for a wedding. Not her own, she clarified as I helped with her bag, but for a very close friend who lived there. She was flying out of Palmerston North later that week.
The initial part of the journey was familiar territory – through the city, past the sprawl, and out onto the Southern Motorway. The traffic was already building, a slow crawl through the infamous Bombay Hills bottleneck. I could see Léa was watching the world go by, her gaze drifting over the blurred greens of the landscape. She’d mentioned her friend was a bit stressed about wedding plans, and Léa was there to help with the final details, part maid of honour, part emotional support.
We stopped for coffee at a service station just past Hamilton. The usual suspects – diesel, weak coffee, and a choice of sad-looking pies. It was a welcome moment to stretch our legs. As we got back in the car, she was looking at her phone, a little smile playing on her lips. "She just sent me a picture of the flowers," she said, showing me a vibrant bouquet of natives. Later, as we continued south on SH1 past Cambridge and Tirau, she told me more about her friend – how they'd met at university in Nouméa, the shared adventures, the long distance that hadn't diminished their bond. It painted a picture of a deep, enduring friendship, the kind that transcends borders and even oceans.
The landscape shifted as we drove south. The rolling farmland gave way to more undulating terrain, the pines starting to appear in thicker stands. We passed through Taupō, the lake a shimmering blue under the midday sun, then continued on towards the central plateau. She’d lived in New Caledonia her whole life, she said, never really feeling the urge to move away permanently. "It's home," she’d stated simply. But she loved coming to New Zealand, appreciating the distinct differences in landscape and culture. The wedding was another excuse to explore a bit more of the country, though she confessed her main focus was on her friend’s big day.
As we descended towards the Manawatū region, the scenery flattened out again. The light began to soften, the afternoon sun casting long shadows across the paddies and fields. She was quiet for a while, just watching the world glide past. I sensed she was perhaps thinking about her friend, or maybe just savouring the quiet end to a long drive. We made one final stop at a lookout point before Palmerston North, a brief moment to take in the wide, open plains stretching out before us. She thanked me for the comfortable journey, her smile genuine and warm. I dropped her at the address she'd given, a nice suburban house, and she picked up her suitcase, ready to plunge into the wedding preparations. It’s always satisfying to deliver someone safely to their destination, especially when it’s for such a happy occasion.
