Ibis Budget Auckland to Auckland City private car — Koen's conference trip
By Harry, your driver
The air conditioning in the Ibis Budget was struggling. This is usually a sign things might get a bit toasty or sticky, not just for the guests, but for me driving them afterwards. Christmas Eve was only a day away, and the usual pre-holiday buzz was starting to hum around Auckland. My departure point was the Ibis Budget, a utilitarian place tucked away on Albert Street, and my passenger was heading just a few blocks up the road to a private residence in the CBD. A short hop, a simple drop-off. Sometimes, though, the shortest trips have the most interesting stories.
Koen V. stepped out of the lobby, the kind of understated tourist you see a lot of in Auckland during the summer. He was neatly dressed, carrying a single, sensible roll-aboard case, and looking around the bustling street with a calm curiosity. He was in town for a tech conference, one of those international events that draw people from all corners of the globe. He’d just finished his official business and was on his way to spend some time with a local contact before heading home. He mentioned he’d originally come from Ghent, a place I’d only read about, known for its medieval architecture and canals. Funny how you learn bits of geography from the passengers.
His destination was a grand old villa in Parnell, the kind of historic house that stands out even in Auckland’s more established suburbs. The drive itself was barely ten minutes, navigating the familiar city traffic. We passed the usual landmarks – the Sky Tower looming, the green sweep of the Domain, the terracotta roofs of Parnell starting to appear. I could tell he was taking it all in, the way someone does when they’re here for a brief visit. He wasn't rushing to unpack or check his phone, just watching the city unfold outside the window.
He told me, not in any hurried way, but as if it had just occurred to him, that he’d been surprisingly impressed by the conference presentations, but even more so by the quiet resilience of the speakers. He’d noticed how many of them, despite all the global uncertainties – the economic shifts, the geopolitical tensions, or even closer to home, the disruptions from the previous years – had spoken with a profound sense of optimism about the future of their industry. He himself worked in renewable energy tech, and he felt a similar current of determined hope in that field. He’d been attending these kinds of events for years, he said, and lately, there was a different quality to the discussions. It felt less about theoretical problems and more about practical, people-driven solutions, even when the tech was cutting edge.
We arrived at the Parnell address. The house was beautiful, a classic villa with a wide verandah, nestled amongst mature trees. A woman with a warm smile was waiting on the steps. I pulled up, opened the boot, and handed Koen his case. He thanked me, his expression still carrying that thoughtful stillness from the drive. As he turned to greet his host, I caught a glimpse of him walking up the path, a man who had crossed the world for a conference and found something more profound in the shared human drive towards a better future, even amidst the everyday rush of Auckland streets. I waved goodbye and headed back towards the city, the early summer sun glinting off the rooftops.
