Princes Wharf cruise terminal to Tairua private car — Anja's holiday

The cruise ship docked at Princes Wharf right on time. It was a bright, clear December morning, the kind that makes you feel good about the job. A lot of passengers were disembarking, a buzz of excitement in the air as they looked forward to their explorations of Auckland. My usual checks were done; the cab was clean, the air conditioning set, and the GPS ready for the journey south.

Klaus M. was waiting near the designated pickup point, a man who looked like he was enjoying the break from the usual hustle. He had that sort of relaxed posture you see on people who are on holiday. He was originally from Germany but had been living there for quite some time, he explained. He’d chosen an NZ Intercity Cab for his trip down to Tairua, wanting a comfortable and private way to see the Coromandel Peninsula, rather than being part of a larger tour group.

We set off from the city, heading south along State Highway 1. The usual Auckland traffic was easing as we passed the city centre. Klaus pointed out some landmarks as we drove, things he’d heard about or seen from the ship. I shared a bit too, the history of the area, the local stories that make these places unique. It’s always nice when a passenger is keen to engage, to learn about the Aotearoa.

Our route wasn’t the most direct, but Klaus wanted the scenic approach. Instead of heading straight down the main highway, we took the turn-off towards State Highway 2, which leads east towards the Coromandel Peninsula. Then we connected with State Highway 25, the road that winds through the coastal towns. The landscape started to change as soon as we left the main highway. Rolling farmland gave way to steeper hills, covered in lush green vegetation. The air became fresher, cleaner, tinged with the smell of damp earth and sea salt.

Klaus told me about his travels around the world. He had a particular fondness for islands and coastlines, he mentioned. He’d been to many places, but New Zealand had always been high on his list. He admired the natural beauty, the vastness of the open spaces, and the general friendliness of the people. He found that even though he was a tourist, he felt a sense of welcome everywhere he went. It's something I often hear from international visitors.

We passed through small towns, each with its own character. We saw the turn-offs for places like Thames, a historic gold-mining town, but continued on towards the coast. The road became more dramatic, with sweeping curves and glimpses of the Pacific Ocean on our right. The sea was a deep blue, sparkling under the midday sun. Rocky outcrops and hidden coves started to appear. It’s a drive that demands attention, but the views make it all worthwhile. I always enjoy taking people this way.

As we got closer to Tairua, the scenery became even more spectacular. The road dipped and climbed, revealing stunning vistas at every turn. We could see the distinctive peak of the Tairua mountain in the distance, a familiar landmark for anyone travelling in the area. Klaus was busy taking photos, capturing the dramatic coastline, the vibrant green of the hills, and the endless expanse of the ocean.

He shared his plans for his time in Tairua. He was staying for a few days, intending to explore the local beaches, perhaps take a walk up the mountain for panoramic views, and generally soak up the relaxed atmosphere of the coastal town. He mentioned he was keen to try some of the local seafood, something he’d heard good things about.

Arriving in Tairua felt like entering a different world. The pace of life slows down considerably here. The small town is nestled between the ocean and the estuary, a picturesque setting that immediately puts you at ease. I pulled up to his accommodation, a charming place overlooking the water, as instructed.

Before he got out of the cab, Klaus thanked me for the journey. He commented on the smooth drive and the wealth of information I’d provided. He said he felt he’d already seen so much of the Coromandel’s beauty before even settling in. It’s always rewarding to know you’ve contributed to someone’s holiday experience in a positive way. As he collected his luggage, he gave me a friendly nod. I watched him walk towards his temporary home, already looking relaxed and ready to embrace the Coromandel lifestyle. It was another satisfying day behind the wheel, a reminder of why I love driving these roads and meeting people from all walks of life.
