Cordis Auckland to Cathedral Cove private car — Klaus's special occasion
By Harry, your driver
It was the kind of January Saturday in Auckland that makes you feel you live in the best place on Earth. Heavy, humid air hung over the city, but the Cordis lobby offered a cool, hushed escape, all polished marble and hushed tones. My passenger was already waiting, looking a little out of place amidst the business travellers in his smart casual attire. Klaus F. He was originally from Austria, he’d mentioned, and was in New Zealand for a destination wedding.
He explained his sister was marrying a Kiwi man up in the Coromandel, and he was the only family member who could make the trip. He’d flown in from Vienna just a couple of days prior, navigating jet lag and the novelty of Southern Hemisphere summer. The plan was to head straight to the Coromandel Peninsula, drop him near the venue so he could get ready, and then I’d pick him up again on Monday, his sister’s wedding day. The real trip, though, was Sunday’s excursion to Hahei Beach and the walk to Cathedral Cove with his new sister-in-law and her parents.
We took the southern motorway out of Auckland, the city’s familiar sprawl eventually giving way to the rolling green hills of the Waikato and then further east towards the Hauraki Plains. Klaus was quiet for a long stretch, watching the landscape unfurl outside his window. He seemed to be absorbing it all – the vastness of the sky, the vibrant green of the farmland, the distant, hazy Coromandel ranges. He pointed out a herd of cows, remarking with a faint smile how much greener the grass was than back home in Styria, especially in mid-winter.
Our route took us through Thames, a town that’s seen better days but still holds a certain rugged character. From there, the road narrowed and began to wind, hugging the coastline more closely. The air grew saltier, the sunlight sharper. We passed through small settlements like Kopu and Matatoki, each one a scattering of houses and a few essential services. Klaus seemed increasingly relaxed as we drew closer to his destination. He spoke a little about his sister, how happy she was, and how much he was looking forward to seeing her on her big day.
I dropped him at the turn-off for the residential street where the wedding reception would be held, a beautiful spot overlooking the water. He thanked me, a genuine warmth in his eyes. "It's a long way to come for a wedding," he said, and I just nodded, understanding. Sometimes the journey, all the miles and the planning, is part of the celebration itself.
I spent the rest of the afternoon exploring some of the coastal roads myself, letting the sound of the waves wash over me before heading to a small motel near Whitianga for the night. The prospect of Sunday’s trip to Hahei Beach was already a pleasant one. It’s always a special feeling, being part of these moments in people’s lives, even from the quiet solitude of the driver’s seat. The promise of that iconic beach and the archway carved by the sea, accessible by foot from Hahei, hung in the air, a perfect prelude to a wedding.
