The air was still carrying the crispness of early spring when I pulled up to the Auckland CBD address. It was a high-rise, one I’d visited before, but this time felt different – quieter, somehow. The final stretch into Napier was marked by vineyards stretching as far as the eye could see, a very different kind of green from the Waikato. The drizzle had stopped, and the air felt fresh and clean. I dropped Khalid at his accommodation near the city centre. He thanked me, his smile genuine and warm this time. As he stepped out, he said he hoped to capture the sunset over the sea. He had a quiet poise about him, a man who knew how to appreciate a moment of calm. I watched him head into his hotel, a solitary figure against the bright, almost Mediterranean-style architecture of Napier, carrying his camera and his quiet observations, ready for whatever the East Coast had to show him.
