Auckland CBD address to Napier private car — Khalid's holiday
By Harry, your driver
The air was still carrying the crispness of early spring when I pulled up to the Auckland CBD address. It was a high-rise, one I’d visited before, but this time felt different – quieter, somehow. The man waiting for me downstairs was Khalid A. He was dressed impeccably, a dark scarf carefully draped over his shoulders, a small, elegant suitcase by his side. He’d booked the trip to Napier, just for a few days of exploring, he’d said on the phone, a chance to see more of the North Island outside of the usual tourist trails.
Khalid was pleasant, his English fluent, but with that distinct cadence. He settled into the back seat, a gentle nod of thanks. As we navigated the usual morning crawl out of the city, I offered him a bottle of water and asked if he had any preferences for stops. He just smiled and said he’d leave it to me, trusting my local knowledge. This is usually a good sign – it means they’re relaxed, ready to experience the journey. We headed south on the motorway, the familiar concrete sprawl of South Auckland giving way to the rolling green farmlands of the Waikato.
My first planned stop was the small town of Tirau, famous for its corrugated iron sculptures. Khalid seemed amused by the giant Kiwi and T-Rex looming over the main street. I bought us both coffees from a small roadside café, the steam rising in the cool September air. He took his black, no sugar, and sipped it slowly, looking around with a quiet curiosity. He mentioned he was fascinated by the sheer scale of New Zealand’s landscapes, so different from the vast deserts he knew back home. He told me he was a photographer, and that he’d brought a special camera to capture the light here.
Back on the road, we continued south on SH1, through Cambridge and towards Taupō. I decided to take a slight detour to the Aratiatia Rapids, a choice guided by the fact that Khalid was interested in landscapes and I had a bit of flexibility. The sheer power of the water being released was particularly striking. Khalid was captivated, pointing his camera out the window, silently composing shots. He said little about his life back in Saudi Arabia, only that he travelled frequently for business, but this was his first dedicated holiday to New Zealand. He seemed to appreciate the raw beauty, the contrast between the dense green bush and the powerful river.
As we climbed out of the Taupō region and the landscape began to flatten out towards the Hawke’s Bay, the sky started to build with grey clouds. A light drizzle began to fall, softening the colours of the paddocks. Khalid didn't seem bothered. He was quietly reviewing photos on his camera, a small, contented smile on his face. He’d told me earlier that his family, his wife and children, were back home, and that his wife had recommended he visit New Zealand. He’d picked it because it seemed peaceful, a place to reflect. He mentioned that his daughter was studying art, and he was looking for inspiration for her.
The final stretch into Napier was marked by vineyards stretching as far as the eye could see, a very different kind of green from the Waikato. The drizzle had stopped, and the air felt fresh and clean. I dropped Khalid at his accommodation near the city centre. He thanked me, his smile genuine and warm this time. As he stepped out, he said he hoped to capture the sunset over the sea. He had a quiet poise about him, a man who knew how to appreciate a moment of calm. I watched him head into his hotel, a solitary figure against the bright, almost Mediterranean-style architecture of Napier, carrying his camera and his quiet observations, ready for whatever the East Coast had to show him.
