Jet Park Hotel Auckland Airport to Whangārei private car — Jing's holiday
By Harry, your driver
The rain was on and off that Monday morning, a typical Auckland August, spitting one minute, then clearing up to show a weak sun the next. I pulled up to the Jet Park Hotel at Auckland Airport, the kind of place where people grab a final coffee before heading overseas, or settle in after a long flight. My passenger, Jing L, was waiting just inside the lobby, a small suitcase at her side and a bright, almost defiant, smile that seemed out of place with the greyness outside. She had the kind of polite reserve you often see, a carefulness in her movements that spoke of unfamiliar surroundings.
She was heading north, all the way to Whangārei. A holiday, she told me, in the Northland region. This was her first time in New Zealand, and she’d chosen to explore the top of the North Island before flying out from Auckland a couple of weeks later. We chatted briefly about the weather as I loaded her bag, the usual pleasantries before setting off on a journey. As we pulled away from the airport fumes and onto the motorway, the city skyscrapers receded, and the landscape began to open up, giving way to the gentler hills and spreading farmland of the northern Auckland region.
We passed through Orewa and then the slightly more rural Wellsford, the contrast between urban sprawl and agricultural quiet always striking. Jing pointed out the sheep grazing in the paddocks, remarking on how peaceful it looked. She’d come from Shanghai, a city of millions, and the sheer space of New Zealand, even here in the more populated north, seemed to captivate her. She’d spent a few days in Auckland already, doing the usual tourist circuit – Sky Tower, the waterfront, maybe a quick trip to Waiheke Island. But she was eager to get away from the city, to see the 'real' New Zealand, as she put it.
I suggested a stop at a small café I know near Warkworth. It’s a bit off the main highway, down a winding back road, but they do excellent scones and have a view over a small estuary. It’s the kind of place where you can stretch your legs and breathe in some clean air. Jing agreed enthusiastically. While she enjoyed her scone and tea, she pulled out a small notebook and began sketching, quick, fluid lines that captured the shape of the mudflats and the distant tree line. She was an artist, she explained, and wanted to capture the light and colours of Northland. She’d taken classes in Shanghai but found the city too overwhelming for inspiration. Here, she felt she could finally see.
As we continued north, the landscape began to shift again. The rolling farmland gave way to more lush, subtropical vegetation, taller ferns and more dense bush crowding the roadside. The air grew noticeably warmer and cleaner as we bypassed the busy city of Whangārei centre and headed towards the coast, towards the specific area she’d booked accommodation. She’d planned a few days to explore the beaches and the various coves that dot the coastline, maybe a bit of hiking. She mentioned she was excited about seeing the famous kauri trees, something she’d only seen in pictures.
We reached her cottage, a charming little place nestled among trees not far from a secluded beach. The rain had stopped, and a hesitant sun was trying to break through the clouds. Jing thanked me, her smile broader now, more relaxed. She seemed genuinely excited about the days ahead, her notebook already open, ready to capture the new surroundings. I unloaded her bag, and as I drove away, I saw her standing on the porch, looking out towards the sea, a small figure against the vast Northland landscape, ready to start her exploration. It’s a good feeling, dropping someone off like that, knowing they're heading into an adventure, a bit of quiet discovery away from the world.
