Manukau address to Auckland Airport private car — Jing's special occasion

By Harry, your driver

Manukau addressAuckland Airport

It was a Thursday morning in late October, the sort of day where the air felt crisp but the sun promised to warm things up. I was heading out of Manukau, heading towards a private residence to pick up a passenger for Auckland Airport. My notes just said 'Jing L', 'Wedding' and 'Auckland Airport'. Not a lot to go on. I pulled up to the address, a modern-looking house on a quiet, tree-lined street, and waited.

Soon, a young woman appeared. She looked to be in her early twenties, elegantly dressed in a vibrant red and gold cheongsam. She carried a single, large, black suitcase. She introduced herself as Jing, and with a polite nod, settled into the back seat. She offered a small, almost shy smile. The air inside the car immediately felt different, more formal, tinged with anticipation. She spoke just enough English to confirm where we were going, her accent soft and melodic.

The drive from South Auckland towards the airport is always a bit of a gamble. Even on a Thursday, the traffic can be unpredictable. We hit the Southern Motorway, and it was flowing decently, though there were the usual clusters of slower vehicles. Jing sat quietly, occasionally looking out the window. I noticed she had a small, silver locket around her neck, which she kept touching, almost absentmindedly. I wondered what the occasion was.

I steered the conversation gently. 'Are you heading to meet family for a wedding?' I asked, keeping my tone casual. She nodded, her eyes brighter now. 'Yes,' she replied. 'My cousin. She is marrying a New Zealander.' She explained she had flown in from Guangzhou a couple of days ago, straight from her university exams. This wedding was a big deal – a fusion of traditions. Her part, she explained, was largely symbolic, a way to honour her recently departed grandmother who had always dreamt of seeing her granddaughter married in a foreign land.

She shared the story of that locket. It had belonged to her grandmother, and she was wearing it for luck, and as a connection to her. It was a way of bringing a piece of home, and of her family history, with her to this significant moment. She spoke with a quiet maturity, a blend of excitement for her cousin and a touch of melancholy for the grandmother who couldn't be there. It seemed the wedding wasn't just a celebration of a new union, but also a memorial, a bridge between generations and cultures.

As we approached the airport, the familiar scene of departures, arrivals, and the hum of planes took over. Jing gathered her things, a mix of nervousness and excitement palpable. She paid, thanked me with that same polite smile, and then, with a deep breath, headed towards the departures hall. I watched her go, a solitary figure in a striking red dress, carrying her suitcase and a locket full of memories, off to witness and celebrate a significant family milestone. The red of her dress seemed to pulse with the vibrancy of the occasion she was about to join, a small, bright point of connection between Guangzhou and Auckland.
