Cordis Auckland to Taupō private car — Jana's special occasion

Cordis AucklandTaupō

The lobby of the Cordis is always a bit of a whirlwind, especially on a Friday afternoon in October. People rushing, checking in, checking out, the usual hum of a city hotel. My attention was caught by a woman standing a little apart from the main comings and goings, looking slightly overwhelmed but also excited. She had a small, elegant travel case and was scanning the room, her eyes wide. I walked over, bag in hand, and offered a smile. "Jana?" I asked, checking the name on my manifest. She nodded, a shy smile spreading across her face. She was heading down to Taupō for a wedding the next day, a special occasion for her family. This was her first time in New Zealand, and I could tell she was soaking it all in.

The drive south from Auckland started as it always does, a crawl through the city's arteries before we hit the open motorway. Jana watched the cityscape recede, the familiar Auckland skyline replaced by the rolling green of the Waikato. She mentioned she'd flown in from Prague only a couple of days before, and was still adjusting to the time difference and the sheer scale of everything here. She was meeting her sister, who had been living in New Zealand for several years, for this wedding. It was a chance for them to reconnect and celebrate a family milestone together.

We stopped at the usual spot near Tirau, famous for its corrugated iron sheep sculptures. The sun was beginning to dip towards the horizon, casting long shadows across the paddocks. Jana seemed to appreciate the break, taking a deep breath of the crisp country air. She told me a little about her life back home in the Czech Republic, the small town she came from, her work in a library. It was a quiet, unassuming existence, she explained, and this trip felt like a sudden, bright departure from her routine. She spoke with a gentle cadence, her English clear but with that lovely, distinct European lilt.

As we continued south, the landscape began to change. The fields gave way to more undulating terrain, pockets of native bush appearing on hillsides. She pointed out a hawk circling overhead, its silhouette stark against the darkening sky. She'd always loved nature, she said, and the wildness of New Zealand was something she’d dreamt of experiencing. We talked briefly about the upcoming wedding, the people she was looking forward to seeing. It was clear this was more than just a social event; it was a significant family reunion.

Nearing Taupō, the air grew cooler. The lake was a vast, dark expanse to our right, reflecting the twilight sky. I could see the lights of the town twinkling ahead. Jana seemed to visibly relax, the journey’s end in sight. I dropped her at a charming little bed and breakfast just outside the main town centre. She thanked me warmly, her eyes sparkling with anticipation for the day ahead. As I drove away, the quiet hum of the engine felt like a familiar lullaby. Another journey complete, another story carried north with me up the highway.
