Epsom address to Taupō private car — Anna's special occasion

The email came through a few weeks back, a request for a special trip. Epsom to Taupō. The metadata said October, but the client had initially requested September. That’s autumn winding down, heading towards winter. The Auckland skies can get a bit moody then, but you never know. Sometimes you get those crisp, clear days that are just perfect for a long drive. This particular booking was for a wedding, a special occasion in Taupō, and the client wanted a comfortable, reliable way to get there without the hassle of parking or navigating the motorway traffic themselves. A good choice, if I do say so myself. My usual route south from Auckland takes me through Pokeno, a good spot for a quick breather and perhaps a mandatory sausage roll if time allows, then on through Huntly and Ngaruawahia. From there, it’s the climb through the Waikato hills and then opening up towards the plains.

My passenger for the day was a young woman named Sarah T. She lives in Epsom, a lovely suburb of Auckland, and was dressed immaculately when I arrived. A smart dress, perfectly done hair, the whole nine yards. She greeted me with a warm smile, a good sign for the journey ahead. I made sure the cab was spotless, as I always do for these kinds of trips. You want to feel good from the moment you step in. We loaded her small overnight bag, which she assured me was just for a change of clothes for the evening reception, and set off. The morning traffic heading out of Epsom was predictable, nothing too hairy. We eased onto the Southern Motorway and then found our rhythm.

Sarah seemed relaxed, happy even. She mentioned she was travelling alone for this part of the wedding, meeting up with family and friends straight at the venue in Taupō. She explained that her partner’s family was mostly based down south, and it was a big gathering, a real merging of two families. She spoke about the couple with such a genuine fondness. It’s always nice to hear when people are truly happy for friends or loved ones about to embark on married life. She shared a little about her own life in Auckland, her work, her friends, the general hustle and bustle that everyone seems to be navigating these days. It was just a pleasant, easy chat, the kind that makes a long drive feel shorter.

As we headed south, the landscape started to change. The urban sprawl of Manukau faded, replaced by the rolling green hills of the Waikato. It’s a beautiful region, always has been. Pokeno whipped by, and then Huntly. I always make a mental note of the Hakarimata Range as we pass. It stands there, rugged and ancient. Ngaruawahia and the confluence of the Waikato and Waipā rivers. Then the road starts to climb. This section can be a bit winding, but the Mercedes handles it with ease. The air gets clearer as you ascend.

We bypassed Hamilton, sticking to the main route towards the south. The signs for Cambridge appeared, a town I know well. We were on track. Sarah pointed out a particularly picturesque farm as we passed, a classic Waikato vista with cows grazing against a backdrop of green pastures. She reminisced about childhood holidays spent on farms, the freedom and simplicity of it. It sounded idyllic, a far cry from the city life she’s accustomed to now.

Soon, we were passing through Tirau, the corrugated iron capital. It’s always a bit fun, seeing those quirky metal sculptures and buildings. From Tirau, the road flattens out somewhat, and the landscape begins to open up more, hinting at the geothermal activity that lies ahead. The volcanic cones become more visible in the distance. The air takes on a different quality as you get closer to Taupō, a subtle scent that speaks of the earth’s warmth.

We arrived in Taupō with plenty of time to spare before Sarah needed to be at the wedding preparations. The lake was looking serene, a vast expanse of blue. She thanked me, her smile even brighter. She expressed her gratitude for the smooth and comfortable journey, mentioning how it had eased her mind knowing she had reliable transport. It’s always rewarding to hear that. I wished her a wonderful time at the wedding, a sentiment I genuinely meant.

My job was done for this leg. I found a quiet spot overlooking the lake. I had a booking for a return trip the following morning, so I checked into a motel and grabbed a coffee from a local cafe, just soaking in the atmosphere. Taupō has a unique vibe, a mix of holiday destination and quiet lakeside town. The mountains across the lake, sometimes dusted with snow depending on the season, add a dramatic backdrop. I reflected on the journey, the easy conversation, the beautiful scenery of the North Island unfolding outside my window. Sarah’s happiness for her friends was palpable, and that kind of positive energy is infectious. It’s moments like these, witnessing the joy of others and playing a small part in their special days, that make this job so fulfilling. Knowing you’ve provided a safe and smooth passage, allowing someone to focus on what truly matters, that’s the essence of it all.
