QT Auckland to Hamilton private car — Fiona's holiday

The lobby of the QT Auckland hummed with that particular kind of end-of-week energy – people checking out, others checking in, a general air of transition. My passenger, Fiona M., was easy to spot: a red tartan scarf that looked genuinely expensive, a backpack already tagged with small stickers I couldn't quite make out, and a determined set to her shoulders.

She’d booked a standard private car transfer through the website, heading south to Hamilton. I’d done the pickup early afternoon. Spring was just starting to show its face, a gentle warmth in the air, but Auckland traffic had its usual grip. We eased out of the city, the skyscrapers slowly giving way to the more familiar sprawl of the southern suburbs. Hamilton was her first stop, a base for exploring the Waikato Museum and maybe taking a trip out to Hobbiton. From there, she’d planned a route through to Rotorua and then Taupō, before heading back north towards the Coromandel Peninsula.

“It’s been rather organised,” she’d said, gesturing to a meticulously folded map on her lap. “Flights, hotels booked, most transport slotted in. But I do like a bit of freedom, you know? Just to see what turns up.\” She smiled, a bright, open sort of smile that made her eyes crinkle. “I’m originally from near Stirling,” she offered, touching the tartan scarf. “Been living in Edinburgh for years. This is my first big adventure on my own, really. My husband passed a couple of years back, and my daughter said I should do something. So, here I am."

We stopped in Cambridge for a coffee and a stretch. It’s always a good little town for a break. The sun was out, and the main street had that quiet charm it always does. Fiona bought a local jam from a small artisan shop, something with passionfruit and pear. She seemed to be enjoying the simple act of discovery, the small moments of local flavour. On the drive down south, she told me about her lifelong interest in botany, how she’d spent years working in a university library with a particularly impressive collection of horticultural texts. She spoke about European ferns and the unique flora of New Zealand with equal enthusiasm.

As we approached Hamilton, the light was starting to soften. She gathered her belongings, the backpack settled back onto her shoulders. “Thank you, Harry,” she said, her voice warm. “It’s been a lovely drive. Peaceful. Just what I needed to start my journey.\” Her hotel was a modern place near the river, and I helped her with her bag. The plan was for me to pick her up in five days for the next leg of her trip, heading west towards the coast.

Watching her walk into the reception, a small, solitary figure with her tartan scarf a splash of colour against the muted tones of the building, I felt a quiet satisfaction. It’s not just about getting people from A to B. Sometimes, it's about being part of the quiet beginning of someone’s big adventure, a steady presence on the road for a moment before they step off into the unknown, armed with their maps, their curiosity, and a jar of local jam.
