February can still have a bit of summer heat clinging to it, even in Auckland. The SkyCity Hotel was buzzing, the usual mix of business travellers and tourists. But this one, Ethan R, stood out. From the moment he mentioned he was flying in from Denver, I knew this wasn’t going to be just another pickup.

He was heading north, a good few hours up to Sandy Bay, near Whangarei. As we got further north, the air began to feel cleaner, the colours brighter. The SH1 ribboned through more remote country, eventually turning onto the smaller, winding roads that lead towards the coast. The traffic thinned out considerably. He pointed out a particularly stunning view of the Hauraki Gulf, a shimmering blue against the green hills. "It's something else," he’d said, a genuine appreciation in his voice. It’s trips like these, away from the main arterial routes, where you really see the heart of the Northland.

He spoke about his family back in Colorado, the sheer scale of the mountains there, so different from our gentle, rounded volcanic cones. The contrast, he felt, was part of New Zealand's unique charm. He hadn't been to the Southern Hemisphere before, and the different angle of the sun, the upside-down constellations he might see if he stayed out late enough – it all seemed to hold a quiet fascination for him. He wasn’t a tourist in the usual sense, not rushing from one landmark to another, but someone experiencing the place more subtly.

When we finally turned off the main road towards Sandy Bay, the houses became more scattered, the driveways longer. The air was infused with the scent of salt and damp earth. He seemed to visibly relax as we got closer to his sister’s place. He thanked me, a simple, sincere gesture, and shouldered his backpack. I watched him walk up the drive, a lone figure against the backdrop of a beautiful, rugged coastline. It was a quiet arrival, a man coming home in a way, even if home was thousands of miles away.
