SkyCity Hotel to Taupo private car — Eleanor's holiday
By Harry, your driver
The sky above Auckland was a classic mid-winter grey, the kind that promises a damp chill even before the rain starts. My usual morning routine of checking the vehicle, making sure the cooler was stocked, and reviewing the day's bookings felt extra deliberate under that low ceiling. The cruise ship passengers, I knew, would be a mix of wide-eyed excitement and weary travel legs. Eleanor P. was my first charge of the day, scheduled for pick up right outside the SkyCity Hotel. She was easy to spot, even from a distance. Unlike the usual rush of fellow travellers navigating the bus tours, she stood a little apart, a small, neat suitcase beside her, gazing up at the Sky Tower with an almost wistful expression.
She’d booked a solo trip down to Taupō, a private transfer. Her London friends had recommended NZ Intercity Cabs, and after a moment’s pleasantries, the brief conversation confirmed she was on a solo adventure, a respite from a demanding job back in the UK. She spoke of autumn leaves and crisp air, painting a picture of the countryside she was hoping to find, a contrast to the urban hustle she’d left behind. Taupō was her chosen base, a place she’d read about for its lake and volcanic activity, though she admitted she wasn’t much of an adventurer, more of a quiet observer.
The drive south from the city was a familiar rhythm. The initial crawl through Auckland traffic, the gradual opening up of the motorway, the familiar fields and farms of the Waikato unfolding on either side. Eleanor was content to watch the scenery, occasionally pointing out a particularly striking stand of trees or a herd of cows. We passed through Pokeno, a town that always seemed to have more ice cream shops than people, and then onto the main highway towards the South. The landscape began to shift subtly, the flatlands giving way to gentle undulations. We stopped at a small roadside café near Huntly for a quick coffee and a stretch of the legs. The air was cool, the sky still holding its breath, threatening but not quite delivering its rain. She chose a flat white and a slice of something vaguely fruity, a small, quiet indulgence before heading back to the car.
As we drew closer to Tirau, the corrugated iron architecture of the town appeared like a shimmering mirage in the distance. Eleanor commented on it, amused, and I explained the local quirk. It was around this point, as the road began to climb more noticeably and the landscape took on a more rugged character, that she opened up a little more. She wasn't just escaping work, she told me. She was also processing a recent loss. A close family member, someone who had always dreamed of visiting New Zealand but never had the chance. Taupō, she felt, was a place he would have loved – the expansive lake, the sense of quiet power in the earth around it. She’d brought a small, rather worn paperback book with her, and she showed me the inscription inside, a gift from him. It was a quiet revelation, a layer of depth beneath her polite demeanour, and I found myself driving a little more slowly, a little more carefully, through the winding roads that led us towards the central plateau.
The first glimpse of Lake Taupō, even under the muted August sky, was always impressive. The vast expanse of water, stretching out to meet the distant, hazy mountains. I dropped Eleanor at her motel overlooking the lake as the afternoon began to fade. The chill in the air was more pronounced now, the wind carrying the scent of damp earth and pine. She thanked me, a warm smile finally reaching her eyes, and I felt a quiet sense of satisfaction. It wasn't just about getting from A to B. Sometimes, it was about holding a quiet space for someone else’s journey, for their reflections, for their tentative steps into whatever came next.
