SkyCity Hotel to Hamilton private car — Chloe's business trip

The Friday morning sun was just starting to burn off the usual Auckland haze as I pulled up to the SkyCity Hotel. It was a smart-looking establishment, all glass and steel, right in the heart of the city. My passenger today was David M, a chap from down Wellington way, though he’d been living up here in Auckland for a good few years now. He was heading to Hamilton for some business, a familiar route for me, and one I always enjoy.

David was already waiting by the entrance, briefcase in hand, looking every bit the professional. He had that focused air about him, the kind you get when you’ve got a busy day ahead. We loaded his bag into the boot, and he settled into the back seat with a polite nod. The city traffic was starting to build, as you’d expect on a Friday, but we joined the flow heading south, making for the Southern Motorway.

As we cleared the main urban sprawl, the landscape began to open up. We zipped past Manukau, and soon enough, the familiar sign for Bombay Hills appeared. Even though it’s not a particularly steep climb, there’s always a sense of leaving the city behind as you crest the top. The air felt a bit clearer, the pace a little more relaxed. David was quiet for a while, gazing out the window, perhaps mentally running through his day’s agenda. I’m used to passengers wanting to chat, but I also appreciate those who prefer their own thoughts, especially when they’ve got important work on.

Our first real stop, in terms of a known landmark, was Pokeno. It’s a place that’s become synonymous with ice cream, and I often get asked about it. This time, however, it was just a blur as we passed through. David seemed content to let the scenery drift by. The Waikato region unfolded before us, a vast expanse of green farmland, dotted with dairy cows. It’s a landscape that’s quintessentially New Zealand, peaceful and productive.

We drove through Huntly and then Ngaruawahia, towns that have their own stories, their own communities. I always feel a bit of pride navigating these routes; it’s the backbone of the country, really. David mentioned that his meeting was in the central business district of Hamilton, a place I know like the back of my hand. He explained that he was involved in some sort of new technology development, something that sounded quite cutting-edge. He didn't go into specifics, of course, but I gathered it was a crucial presentation he was attending, one that could have significant implications for his company. He spoke about the challenges of innovation, the need for clear communication, and the drive to stay ahead in a competitive market. He shared that he’d been working on this particular project for some time and was keen to see the fruits of his labour.

As we approached Hamilton, the signs started to appear, guiding us towards the city centre. The urban environment began to assert itself again, though Hamilton always feels a bit more spread out, a bit less intense than Auckland. We navigated the streets, the Friday afternoon traffic thankfully not too heavy; it was still early enough in the day for that. I knew exactly where to go, easing the car smoothly into the drop-off zone outside the office building David had specified.

He gathered his things, thanked me for the smooth ride, and stepped out, already looking energized for his meeting. He gave me a final nod, the briefcase swinging slightly as he walked towards the entrance. I watched him go, another trip completed, another connection made. It’s moments like these that make the job worthwhile – helping people get where they need to be, in comfort and on time. The drive back to Auckland would involve the same route, but in reverse, the afternoon light casting long shadows across the Waikato plains. I always enjoy the quiet reflection time on the return journey, thinking about the people I’ve met and the places I’ve been. It’s a good life, driving these roads, seeing the country, meeting its people.
