SkyCity Hotel to Pauanui private car — Chloe's holiday
By Harry, your driver
There’s a particular kind of crispness to the air on a late November morning in Auckland. It’s not quite summer, but the promise is definitely there. The SkyCity Hotel, usually a hive of activity, felt a little subdued as I pulled up. My passenger, Chloe M, was waiting by the entrance, a bright yellow carry-on bag at her feet, and a wide smile on her face. She looked every bit the tourist ready for a coastal escape – sunglasses perched on her head, a light jacket that hinted at the sea breeze to come.
She was heading down to Pauanui for a few days of what she called ‘decompression’ after a hectic work year. Hailing from Perth, she’d never been to The Coromandel before, and the thought of its renowned beaches and relaxed pace had clearly won out over another trip to Queenstown or the Bay of Islands. As we cleared the city and got onto State Highway 1, the urban sprawl gradually gave way to green fields dotted with sheep. Auckland traffic, even on a Friday morning, can be a real gamble, but we timed it just right, slipping through the southern suburbs before the main rush hit.
My usual rhythm on these trips is to let the passenger settle in, and Chloe was happy to gaze out the window, occasionally pointing out a particularly picturesque farm. We chatted briefly about her plans – a bit of reading on the beach, maybe a walk around the estuary, a seafood lunch somewhere with a view. Nothing too strenuous, just pure unwinding. I thought about my own first time seeing The Coromandel Peninsula properly years ago, the way the landscape shifts so dramatically as you get closer to the coast.
We made our customary stop at the BP in Pokeno for a quick coffee and a stretch. The smell of the petrol and the nearby doughnut factory is a peculiar but familiar aroma of New Zealand road trips. Chloe bought a postcard, a small silver fern, which I thought was a charming touch. Back on the road, we turned east onto State Highway 2, heading towards the Coromandel. The scenery started to get a bit more dramatic now, with rolling hills and glimpses of the Firth of Thames appearing between the trees. Around Kopu, the road starts to hug the Hauraki Plains more closely, and the air takes on that distinct seaside tang, even before you properly see the ocean.
The road from Kopu towards Tairua, especially the Kopu-Hikuai Road (SH25A), is one of my favourites. It’s narrow and winding, with sections that feel like you’re driving through a tunnel of native bush. Even in November, the canopy casts deep shadows, and the air feels cooler. Chloe was quiet now, her nose practically pressed against the window, taking it all in. She mentioned she’d heard about the famous beaches of The Coromandel, the white sand and clear water, and she was looking forward to seeing if they lived up to the reputation. I told her Pauanui beach, with its long sweep of sand, was certainly a strong contender.
As we descended towards Tairua, the vast expanse of the Pacific suddenly opened up before us. The blue of the ocean under a clear sky is always a breathtaking sight. We crossed the Tairua river and turned north towards Pauanui. The houses here are a mix of older bach-style dwellings and some more modern, architecturally designed homes, all reflecting that relaxed coastal vibe. I always notice the boats moored in the estuary, the sails flapping gently in the breeze.
Pulling up to her holiday rental, a neat little cottage with a small garden overflowing with fuchsias, Chloe thanked me warmly. She mentioned how much she’d enjoyed the journey, not just the destination but the drive itself, the way the landscape had unfolded. She said she felt more relaxed already, the city stress already melting away with the kilometres we'd covered. I helped her with her bag, and as she turned to head inside, she gave another bright smile. It’s always satisfying to deliver someone to their escape, especially when you can feel the tension leaving them with every mile. As I drove away, the sun glinting off the water, I felt a familiar sense of contentment. Another good journey, another passenger starting their break.
