Auckland Rose Park Hotel to Waihi private car — Chloe's trip
By Harry, your driver
The Mercedes was gleaming, as usual. Out front of the Rose Park Hotel on a bright December morning, it always looked like it was waiting for a film star, not just another fare from Auckland to Waihi. I was wiping down the windows for the third time, just a habit, when Chloe D. stepped out. She was one of those travelers who seemed to carry the sunshine with her – tanned, bright clothes, and a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. She had a single, surprisingly compact suitcase, looking more like someone heading for a weekend break than a longer haul.
'Waihi, please,' she said, confirming the destination I already had on my tablet. 'No rush, but, you know, eventually.'
I loaded her bag and we pulled away from the hotel. The city was already humming, that pre-holiday buzz starting to build. We navigated through Parnell and onto the Southern Motorway. She was quiet for the first hour or so, gazing out at the passing landscape – the green fields of the Waikato slowly unfolding. I could tell she was taking it all in, like flipping through a photo album of memories she hadn't made herself. She'd mentioned she'd just arrived from Sydney that morning and was travelling on her own for a bit of a reset.
Once we cleared the Pokeno bottleneck, the motorway opened up. I pointed out the Hauraki Plains rolling past, vast and flat, a different sort of beauty to the rolling hills around Auckland. She asked about the Kaimai Range looming ahead, and I explained how we’d be going through the Karangahake Gorge. You always get a good reaction to that part of the drive. It’s not just the tunnels and the old mining history; it’s the sudden plunge into a different world, the river carving its way through ancient rock. It feels wild, even though it's just a few kilometres off the main road.
As we wound through the Gorge, the sunlight dappled through the ferns and the trees, illuminating patches of the river. She finally seemed to relax, the tightness around her jaw softening. She told me a bit more about why she was here. Not a holiday, exactly, but a deliberate distance from a life that had become too much. A relationship ending, a career pivot stalled, the general weight of things. Australia, she said, could be very loud sometimes, and she needed quiet. She was hoping Waihi, with its beaches and slower pace, might offer that. She wasn't exactly sure what she'd do when she got there, just that she needed to be by the sea and away from the city noise.
We stopped at a small café just before Waihi for a quick coffee and a stretch. The smell of damp earth and warm pastries hung in the air. She bought a small, plain scone, and we sat outside for a few minutes, watching the clouds drift over the hills. It was a moment of shared stillness, a brief pause before the final leg. She thanked me for the quiet company and the smooth drive.
Arriving in Waihi, the air felt different – saltier, lighter. I dropped her at a small bach she'd rented, a simple place with a bit of sea visible from the porch. She thanked me again, that smile finally reaching her eyes this time. As I drove away, I saw her standing on the porch, looking out towards the coast, a single suitcase at her feet. There was a sense of quiet anticipation about her, like the calm before a wave breaks. I hoped Waihi would give her the peace she was looking for.
