Auckland Airbnb to Whitianga private car — Astrid's special occasion

The early September air in Auckland still held a hint of winter's chill, even as the sun began to warm the streets of Ponsonby. I pulled up to the curb outside a neat little villa, the kind that always looks like it’s hosting a secret garden party. My passenger, Astrid, was standing on the porch, a bright yellow suitcase by her side that seemed to defy the grey sky. She was originally from Norway, she’d mentioned when booking, coming to New Zealand for a significant family event.

The drive out of the city was predictably slow, the usual crawl through the Southern Motorway. It gave me a chance to observe Astrid. She had that quiet, observant way about her, her gaze sweeping over the passing suburban landscape with an appreciation that was quite touching. She was headed to Whitianga, on the Coromandel Peninsula, for her brother’s wedding. He’d emigrated some years ago and had finally put down roots there, marrying a local woman. This was her first visit to New Zealand, and naturally, she wanted to see where her brother had chosen to build his new life.

We bypassed the main highway through the Karangahake Gorge, opting for the old State Highway 25. The road winds its way through rolling farmland and pockets of native bush, a far gentler introduction to the Coromandel than the more direct but less scenic route. The air began to change as we neared the coast – a fresh salt tang mixed with the sweet scent of damp earth. Astrid rolled down her window for a moment, inhaling deeply. "It smells so clean," she said, her voice soft. It wasn't so much a question, but a statement of fact. I nodded, knowing exactly what she meant. You get that clean scent most strongly after a good rain, and though the sky was a bit overcast, the land itself seemed to be breathing out a sigh of refreshment after recent showers.

Our talk eventually turned to her brother. He’d been the adventurous one, she explained, always chasing new horizons. Norway, with its dramatic fjords and long winters, had been his home, but he’d found a different kind of beauty and freedom here. He’d sent photos, of course – the turquoise waters of Mercury Bay, the lush green hills, the vineyards that dotted the landscape. But photos, as we both knew, could only capture so much. Astrid was here to experience it firsthand, to see the place that had captured her brother’s heart and convinced him to make such a significant move.

We stopped briefly at a small café in Coromandel Town, a place that still felt steeped in the gumdigging history of the region. Astrid bought a small, intricately carved wooden bird, a memento of the peninsula. It was a quiet sort of purchase, not flashy, but with a deliberate thoughtfulness about it, the sort of thing a person might choose to hold onto for a long time. We continued on the final stretch towards Whitianga, the road opening up to reveal glimpses of the sparkling water.

As we approached the town, the wedding preparations were beginning to make themselves felt. More cars, a certain festive air about the place. I found the Airbnb where her family was staying, a modern bach overlooking the bay. As Astrid gathered her things, she turned to me with a genuine smile. "Thank you for the drive, Harry. It was… very peaceful." I wished her a wonderful time at the wedding and watched as she disappeared inside, her yellow suitcase a bright splash of colour against the muted tones of the Coromandel coastline. The drive back to Auckland, under a sky that was slowly clearing, felt a little lighter, carrying the faint echo of a joyful occasion about to unfold.
