Albany office to Whangārei private car — Eleanor's holiday
By Harry, your driver
The October morning in Albany was crisp and clear, perfect for a drive north. My passenger for the day, Arthur P. from the United Kingdom, was waiting outside his office building right on time. He had a good-natured smile and looked eager to get going. He explained that he was here on holiday, a chance to see a bit more of New Zealand beyond the usual tourist spots advertised in the brochures. Whangārei was his destination for the day, and he was keen on taking in some of the scenery along the way. We loaded his small overnight bag into the boot and settled into the cab.
As we headed out of Albany and joined the Northern Motorway, Arthur pointed out a few things he'd noticed already about Auckland. He mentioned the sheer number of trees, how green everything looked, even in the urban areas. He'd been visiting friends and family here and there, but this was his first proper solo excursion. He expressed his appreciation for the quiet of the cab, the smooth ride. I just nodded and focused on the road, keeping a steady pace. We were making good time.
Soon enough, we were leaving the city sprawl behind. The landscape began to open up. Rolling green hills dotted with sheep started to dominate the view. The air quality changed noticeably as we moved further from the city; it felt cleaner, fresher. Arthur commented on the wide-open spaces, so different from what he was used to back home. He spoke about his work in the UK, something about finance, but he was clearly relishing this break from routine. He loved how the road wound its way through the countryside, offering glimpses of dairy farms and small clusters of houses.
Our first real stop was Warkworth. It’s a charming little town, and I often stop there if a client wants a break. Arthur found the quaintness of the main street appealing. He mentioned how some of the older buildings reminded him of parts of England, but with that distinct New Zealand flavour. He bought a coffee from a local cafe and we walked a short distance to admire the river winding through the town. He took a few photos, not with a fancy camera, but with his phone, capturing the bridge and the boats moored along the bank. He seemed genuinely relaxed, enjoying the simple act of exploring.
Back on the road, we continued towards Wellsford. The terrain became a little more rugged in places, with some steeper hills and denser bush visible on the slopes. Arthur remarked on the variety of the landscape. He’d imagined New Zealand being all mountains and beaches, but this drive was showcasing a much subtler beauty. He shared that he’d always wanted to visit New Zealand. A childhood dream, he called it. Maybe a documentary he’d seen years ago, or perhaps just the allure of a far-flung land. Whatever it was, he felt he was finally experiencing it.
As we neared Whangārei, the signs for the city gradually appeared. The journey had taken a scenic route, more about the experience than just reaching the destination. Arthur had been a pleasure to drive. He was happy to chat when I offered a bit of local insight, but equally content to gaze out the window, lost in his own thoughts. He appreciated the commentary I provided about the local areas we passed through, the history hinted at by the names of the towns and the types of architecture visible. He mentioned he had a few days planned in the Whangārei area, intending to explore the coast and maybe do some hiking. He was looking forward to seeing the famous falls.
We arrived at his accommodation just as the afternoon sun was starting to cast longer shadows. He thanked me warmly, his smile returning. He said the drive itself had been a highlight of his trip so far. He appreciated not having to worry about navigation or parking, allowing him to simply soak in the surroundings. He mentioned that he'd booked me for his return journey, which was scheduled for the following day – always a good sign. As he stepped out of the cab, I got the feeling he was already planning his next adventure around the Northland region. It’s these kinds of trips that make driving for NZ Intercity Cabs so rewarding. Seeing people experience the beauty of our country, even just on a short drive, is a fantastic part of the job.
