Cordis Auckland to Whangapoua private car — Anouk's conference trip
By Harry, your driver
The automatic doors of the Cordis slid open, and there she was, standing just inside the lobby, a small suitcase and a roll-aboard bag at her feet. She looked like someone who knew exactly where she was going, but also like someone who might be a little overwhelmed by the sheer size of the place and the buzz of a city hotel. Anouk was her name, from Belgium, and she was heading east, eventually, to Whangapoua. A conference in the city had finished, and now it was time for the more remote, coastal part of her trip.
We loaded up the car, the familiar routine of stowing luggage making an immediate quiet connection. The city traffic was already starting its familiar December crawl as we headed out of Auckland, the sky a bright, clear blue – perfect summer weather setting in. Anouk was quiet for the first hour, mostly looking out the window, taking in the semi-rural landscape as we passed through the Bombay Hills and then on towards the turn-off for the Coromandel. I could tell she was absorbing it all, a deep breath of fresh air after the intensity of a conference.
Around Pokeno, the roads started to widen, giving way to more rolling farmland and glimpses of the Firth of Thames. The air was warm, and we even saw a few tractors out working the fields. Anouk mentioned she’d been to London a few years back for a different industry event, but she felt this was a different kind of experience entirely. She spoke about the meticulous planning that had gone into her trip, how she’d researched the quiet corners of the Coromandel coastline for a few days of peace before her flight home. It wasn't the usual tourist trail she was after; she wanted silence, space, and the sound of the sea.
As we turned onto State Highway 25 towards Thames, the landscape softened further, becoming more verdant with pockets of native bush appearing by the roadside. We stopped briefly at a small café in Thames for a coffee – a quick leg stretch and a chance to grab a little something for the road. The sun was high now, really warming things up. Back in the car, the conversation flowed a little more easily. She shared a little about her work, something in sustainable urban planning, and how the contrast between the built environment of Auckland and the natural beauty of the coast was always something she appreciated. She was here to recharge, to find inspiration away from the constant demands of her profession.
Later, as we approached the Coromandel Peninsula side roads, the scenery became more dramatic. The road narrowed and wound its way through hills carpeted in green, occasionally offering stunning views of the ocean through gaps in the trees. The drive from the main highway out to Whangapoua is always a bit of an adventure, a proper country road that hints at the secluded destination. We passed through small clusters of houses, then the landscape opened up, revealing the bay itself.
Pulling up to the address she’d given me, a simple bach nestled amongst the trees, the sound of the waves was already audible. It was exactly the sort of quiet, understated spot she’d been hoping for. I helped her with her bags to the door. She thanked me with a genuine smile, a quiet satisfaction evident in her eyes. Anouk had arrived, and the rest of her time was her own, a blank canvas of coastal peace before the journey home. I drove away, the sound of the surf fading behind me, a sense of completion in the air, knowing I'd delivered her to precisely what she'd sought.
