QT Auckland to Paihia private car — Hendrik's holiday

The frost was still clinging to the edges of the windows when I pulled up to the hotel in Auckland. It was a stunning morning, the kind that makes you appreciate living where we do, even if the traffic can be a bit of a beast. My passenger for the day, Annelies V, had booked a trip all the way up to Paihia. She was from the Netherlands, and this was a special holiday for her. I could tell she was excited, a quiet kind of energy buzzing around her as she settled into the back seat.

We headed north, leaving the city behind. The familiar landmarks slid by – Queen Street, the Harbour Bridge, the sprawling suburbs giving way to rolling green farmland. Annelies seemed to be taking it all in, her gaze flitting from the vineyards to the distant volcanic cones. She told me, in her gentle Dutch accent, about how she’d always dreamed of seeing this part of New Zealand. She’d read books about it, seen photos, and now here she was, the real thing unfolding outside her window.

The drive up the State Highway 1 is always a pleasant one. We passed through Warkworth, its charming bridge a familiar sight, and then on towards Wellsford. The landscape started to change, becoming a little wilder, a little more rugged as we neared the coast. Annelies pointed out a flock of sheep grazing on a steep hillside, their white fleeces like scattered tufts of cotton. She mentioned how different it was from the flatlands of her home country; the dramatic undulations of the land here held a real fascination for her.

She shared stories of her life in the Netherlands, of the canals and the windmills, and how she’d decided to embark on this solo adventure to New Zealand after a significant life event. It sounded like a journey of rediscovery. She spoke of the Dutch spirit of exploration, of how her ancestors had sailed the seas to far-off lands, and how she felt a connection to that adventurous streak, even if her mode of travel was slightly more comfortable.

We stopped at a small service station somewhere north of Wellsford for a quick leg stretch and some coffee. Annelies bought a little postcard of a kiwi bird, her eyes twinkling as she imagined sending it back home. She was particularly taken with the lushness of the vegetation, the abundance of ferns and the towering trees that lined the roadside. She noted the distinct smell of the air, cleaner, fresher, tinged with the scent of damp earth and salt from the nearby ocean.

As we continued towards the Northland region, the scenery became even more breathtaking. The road wound its way through dense native bush, occasionally opening up to reveal glimpses of turquoise ocean. We saw signs for various bays and beaches, places that promised white sand and sparkling water. Annelies mentioned that her itinerary included a visit to Russell tomorrow, and she was looking forward to experiencing the historic charm of the 'First Capital of New Zealand'.

Arriving in Paihia felt like stepping into a postcard. The water in the bay was a brilliant blue, dotted with small boats. The air was warmer here, carrying the faint, briny scent of the sea. Annelies was visibly impressed. We made our way to her accommodation, a lovely place overlooking the water. As she gathered her bags, she thanked me for the smooth and scenic journey. She told me she was so glad she’d chosen to come this far north, that the drive itself had been a significant part of the experience.

I explained that the ferry to Russell would be waiting for her, a small but essential part of exploring the area. She was already planning her evening, a stroll along the waterfront perhaps, before her explorations the following day. As I watched her walk towards her hotel, a sense of quiet satisfaction settled over me. It’s moments like these, helping people discover the beauty of Aotearoa, that make being a driver for NZ Intercity Cabs so rewarding. The drive back to Auckland felt a little longer in the fading light, but my mind was filled with the images of the rugged coastline and the happy anticipation on Annelies’s face. Another good trip, another story to tell.
