Princes Wharf cruise terminal to Auckland Airport private car — Anjali's holiday
By Harry, your driver
The cruise ship was due in just after dawn, a colossal beast docked at Princes Wharf. Even from a few streets away, its sheer scale was something to behold, dwarfing the usual city bustle. My job was simple: be there, a discrete welcome from the land before she even stepped onto solid ground. I parked up a little way back, letting the disembarking tide ebb and flow, looking for the right face among the organised chaos of luggage trolleys and excited greetings.
My passenger, Anjali V, was easy to spot. She had a quiet presence, a carefulness as she navigated the crowded pavement, her eyes taking in the unfamiliar architecture of the city with a mixture of curiosity and perhaps a touch of trepidation. She’d booked me for a direct transfer to the airport, her flight home later that evening. She was travelling alone, having spent a couple of weeks exploring New Zealand with friends who had already departed. Her home was Mumbai, a city I’ve only ever seen on screen, and I imagined it a world away from the crisp March air filling Auckland’s harbour.
We loaded her sturdy suitcase into the boot and set off. The initial part of the journey was standard city navigation, through the familiar maze of downtown streets. She was quiet for a while, her gaze fixed on the passing scenery, occasionally pointing out something that caught her eye – a particularly vibrant mural, the startling green of Cornwall Park, the distant haze of the Sky Tower receding behind us. I could tell she was absorbing it all, trying to etch the last impressions of this foreign land into her memory.
The drive towards the airport is usually uneventful, a stretch of motorways and suburban sprawl. We passed the familiar landmarks: the bottleneck of Greenlane, the wide expanse of the Southern Motorway stretching south. Anjali eventually spoke again, this time about her time here. She told me about visiting the geothermal wonders of Rotorua, the black sand beaches of the West Coast, and a rather damp but fun ferry trip to Waiheke Island. Her tone was gentle, each memory shared like a carefully placed stone in a mosaic.
She mentioned that many of her friends had warned her about travelling alone, particularly to a country so far from home. “But it was easier than I thought,” she finally said, her voice gaining a bit more confidence. “People are polite. And the landscapes… they are so vast, so empty in places. It makes you feel small, but in a good way.” We passed the airport interchange, a familiar hum of engines and the occasional rumble of planes overhead.
As I pulled up to the departures terminal, the afternoon sun was casting long shadows. The air was still warm, a pleasant end to a New Zealand summer officially drawing to a close. Anjali thanked me, her smile genuine now, a little more relaxed than when she’d first stepped into the car. She disappeared into the throng of travellers, a single figure with a well-worn suitcase, carrying her impressions of Aotearoa back towards Mumbai. Just another passenger, another story briefly shared, another trip completed.
