QT Auckland to Hamilton private car — Anjali's holiday
By Harry, your driver
The August chill was still clinging to the air when I arrived at the QT in Auckland, the sky a soft, pearly grey. Anjali S was waiting by the lobby entrance, a small suitcase and a much larger, heavily padded camera bag. She had a bright, inquisitive look about her, eyes scanning the passing traffic, probably taking in the city’s morning rhythm before she headed south.
She mentioned she was on a solo holiday, a real adventure for her. Her hometown is in Kerala, and she’d been dreaming of New Zealand’s landscapes for years, inspired by documentaries and some incredible photography she’d seen online. She’d spent a few days in Auckland already, ticking off the usual sights, but Hamilton was the real goal, the gateway to exploring the Waikato. She planned to visit the Hamilton Gardens and maybe even try kayaking on the Waikato River. It sounded like a good plan, a quiet escape after the bustle of the city.
We joined the gentle flow of traffic heading out of Auckland, the city gradually receding in the rearview mirror. The Southern Motorway was surprisingly clear for a Thursday morning, though you could sense the build-up starting as we passed Ōtāhuhu. Passing through the Bombay Hills, the landscape smoothed out into the wide pastures of the Waikato. It’s a landscape that feels both prosperous and peaceful, especially under that mild winter sun.
Anjali was quiet for a while, absorbing the scenery. She’d take out her camera occasionally, not snapping pictures of the road itself, but the way the light hit the rolling hills or the distant stands of pine trees. She spoke about the vibrant colours of her home state, the lush greenery, the spice plantations, and how she was keen to see how New Zealand’s farming heartland compared. She asked about the dairy industry, the sheep, the general pace of life outside the main centres. I told her what I knew, pointing out the various farms and the small towns that dotted the route – Pokeno, Mercers, then Huntly with its prominent power station.
We pulled over at a small café just off the highway near Ngaruawahia. The air was crisp, and the aroma of coffee and baking filled the small space. Anjali ordered aflat white and a sticky bun, savouring each bite. She told me a little about her work back home – something in software development – and how she’d saved diligently for this trip. She spoke of the contrast between the heat and monsoons of Kerala and the cooler, drier climate she was experiencing here, finding a simple pleasure in the crisp air. It was good to see someone so clearly relishing the moment, the simple act of being somewhere new.
Back on the road, the conversation shifted. She was thoughtful, reflecting on how different cultures express hospitality and connection. She found the quiet, independent nature of travel in New Zealand appealing, quite different from the large family gatherings she was used to. She mentioned a specific festival back home, a deeply spiritual and communal event, and I could sense the warmth of those memories, balanced with the quiet satisfaction of forging her own path here.
As we neared Hamilton, the landscape opened up further. The university buildings came into view, and then the city itself, a mix of modern architecture and established residential areas. I dropped Anjali off at her accommodation in Hamilton East. She thanked me warmly, her eyes bright with anticipation for the days ahead. She mentioned she was already planning her route to the Gardens for the next morning. It’s always rewarding to know you’ve played a small part in someone’s journey, helping them reach the next step in their exploration. I watched her head towards her building, camera bag slung over her shoulder, ready for the next chapter of her New Zealand adventure.
