Botany address to Waitomo Glowworm Caves private car — Anjali's family visit

By Harry, your driver

The sky over Botany had that soft, hazy quality it gets in early spring, the kind where you can still feel a chill in the air but the sun’s trying its best. I spotted Anjali’s house easily enough – a neat place with a few pots of bright flowers by the door, a small splash of colour against the suburban grey. She was standing on the driveway, looking a little uncertain, not quite sure if I was the right vehicle. As I pulled up and her smile widened, I knew it was an all-too-common start to a trip: the hopeful anticipation of a journey taking them somewhere new.

Anjali had booked for Waitomo, a classic private-car destination from Auckland not just for the caves, but for the sheer novelty of the drive through the Waikato. She was visiting family in a rural area near Otorohanga, not too far from Waitomo itself, and needed a way to get her and her luggage there comfortably. She’d mentioned she’d flown into Auckland the day before and was keen to see a bit of the country before settling in.

The initial part of the drive, through the city’s southeastern arteries down towards the motorway, is always a bit of a crawl. This time of year, the trees are just starting to bud, and the paddocks are a vibrant green. Anjali seemed content to watch it all unfold, her eyes scanning the passing landscape. She came from Mumbai, worlds away from the open fields and rolling hills of the Waikato. I tried to imagine her perspective, seeing this very different kind of beauty.

We passed through Pokeno and Hamilton, the usual rhythm of the journey. Anjali hadn't said much, just polite questions about the car and the route. I stopped at a service centre near Cambridge for a quick break, the kind of place that’s perfectly fine for a stretch and a flask of coffee. While I was getting mine, she bought a small packet of sweets, something with cardamom I think, and offered me one. It was a small gesture, but it broke the ice a little.

She started to open up then, talking about her family. She was travelling to see her younger brother, who had recently moved to New Zealand for work. He was still finding his feet, she said, and she wanted to be there for him, to offer that familiar comfort. It wasn't just about the caves; it was about connection. She spoke about the pace of life back home, the constant hum of activity in Mumbai, and how she craved this quieter pace, even just for a short visit.

As we got closer to Waitomo, the landscape changed subtly. More curves in the road, denser pockets of bush, the air feeling fresher, cooler. I explained where the cave tours departed from and mentioned that the Waitomo Glowworm Caves themselves were just one part of the experience, with boat tours through the main Grotto being the most famous. She tucked that knowledge away, likely for her brother.

We arrived at her family's address in the late afternoon. It was a small, rural property, quite peaceful. Her brother was waiting, and the reunion was warm and immediate, full of smiles and unfamiliar embraces from my distance. As I unloaded her bags, Anjali turned and thanked me, a genuine warmth in her eyes that went beyond the usual customer satisfaction. It was that little spark of shared humanity on the road, a reminder that every trip, no matter how straightforward, carries its own quiet narrative.
