Tauranga to Auckland City private car — Anja's special occasion

By Harry, your driver

TaurangaAuckland City

It was a Tuesday in mid-March, the kind of autumn day where the air had a crispness to it that hints at cooler times ahead, but the sun still managed to warm the tarmac. I was parked outside the hotel in Tauranga, waiting for my passenger. The brief said Anja S, from Austria, heading to Auckland for a wedding, and she'd requested a private car after a slightly chaotic flight itinerary.

The hotel lobby was busy, a mix of conference attendees and holidaymakers checking out. I spotted her almost immediately – a woman with bright, intelligent eyes and practical luggage, scanning the area with a polite sort of urgency. She had a distinctive silver pendant around her neck, shaped like a small, elegant Edelweiss flower, which caught my attention.

We loaded her bags, and as we pulled away from the coast, the conversation started naturally. She'd been travelling for what felt like ages, she told me, starting in Salzburg and connecting through Sydney. This wedding was for a close friend who'd moved to New Zealand a few years back, and Anja hadn't seen her in person for nearly five years. The thought of finally being there, seeing her friend walk down the aisle, seemed to light her up.

As we motored northwards, the landscape began to shift. The rolling green hills, dotted with sheep, started giving way to more farmland. We passed through the charming old mining town of Waihi, where the goldmining dredge is a prominent landmark, and then entered the Karangahake Gorge. I always enjoy this stretch; the narrow road winds alongside the Ohinemuri River, with remnants of the old battery remaining visible in places. It's quite dramatic, the steep hillsides closing in. Anja seemed to appreciate the scenery, her gaze following the twists and turns of the river.

She mentioned she’d always wanted to visit New Zealand, and this was her chance. The wedding was tomorrow in Auckland, and she planned to meet her friend for a brief, quiet catch-up tonight after checking into her city accommodation. She'd been to a few weddings in Europe, but she admitted that a wedding on the other side of the world felt like something particularly special, a real occasion. She spoke about her own country, how the mountains there felt familiar and grounding, but that New Zealand's different sort of beauty had always called to her.

We stopped for a coffee break near Paeroa. There’s a popular café there that does a decent flat white. While she was paying, she showed me a small photograph she carried in her wallet – her friend and her fiancé, smiling broadly. It’s these little glimpses into people’s lives that make the job so interesting.

The drive from the gorge towards the Hauraki Plains and then onto the main highway towards Auckland always feels like a transition. The traffic picks up, and the urban sprawl begins to encroach. Anja was quiet for a while, perhaps contemplating the journey ahead, the reunion with her friend, or just enjoying the rhythm of the road. She pointed out the various shades of green in the paddocks and the impressive dairy herds, remarking on how different it was from the agricultural landscape she knew back home.

As we neared Auckland, the sky began to close in a little, a soft grey promising a cooler evening. The city traffic, even on a Tuesday afternoon, was its usual patient self. I navigated us towards her hotel in the central business district. The Edelweiss pendant glinted in the faint light as she gathered her belongings.

She thanked me warmly as I unloaded her suitcase. There was a sense of quiet anticipation about her, a gentle excitement for the events to come. I wished her a wonderful time at the wedding, and she gave me a genuine smile, the kind that reaches the eyes. Watching her walk into the hotel lobby, I felt a sense of quiet satisfaction. Another journey completed, a small piece of someone else’s story briefly shared, and a connection made across the miles, all centred around a happy occasion on the other side of the world.
