Sofitel Auckland Viaduct to Hobbiton Movie Set private car — Anja's family visit
By Harry, your driver
I got the call for a pickup at the Sofitel in Auckland’s Viaduct. A glamorous place, right on the water. December was just kicking off, and the air had that pre-Christmas buzz in the city. My passenger was Aino L., who I knew was from Finland. She was meeting family who were visiting from overseas, and they’d planned this trip to the Hobbiton Movie Set as a special outing. A classic choice for visitors, that one. It always gives people a bit of magic.
We headed out of the city centre, making our way towards the Southern Motorway. Even with the early afternoon traffic, it wasn't too bad. Aino was settled in the back, looking out the window, taking it all in. I could tell she was someone who appreciated the scenery. She had a quiet intensity about her, the kind you see in people who are really absorbing their surroundings. As we cleared the urban sprawl and hit the open road, the landscape started to change. The familiar rolling green hills of the Waikato began to unfold. It’s always stunning, no matter how many times I drive it. Especially this time of year, with the grass still lush and a good bit of sunshine.
We passed through Bombay, the gateway to the south, and then Pokeno. I always think about the pies at Pokeno when I go through there, famous throughout the North Island. Aino didn't say much, just observed. I mentioned the area, pointing out the farming land and the small towns we skirted. She nodded, her gaze sweeping across the paddies and the grazing livestock. It was a peaceful drive, the kind that lets you have your thoughts and enjoy the rhythm of the road. We weren’t in a rush. The purpose was the destination, and the journey itself was part of the experience.
We bypassed Hamilton, heading towards Matamata, the turn-off for Hobbiton. The roads get a bit more winding as you approach the movie set. The signposts become more frequent, and you start to see more tourist buses and cars making the same pilgrimage. Aino seemed to brighten as we got closer, a hint of anticipation in her expression. It’s a special place, Hobbiton. It’s not just a movie set; it’s like stepping into a fairytale. Even for someone who might not know the movies intimately, there’s an undeniable charm to the little hobbit holes, the gardens, and the overall atmosphere.
When we arrived, she paid her fare and I gave her the rundown on how long she’d have. She was meeting her family inside. She thanked me, her smile genuine, and headed off towards the entrance. I parked up and waited. You learn to read the moods of the places you wait in. Hobbiton’s waiting area has a kind of happy hum to it. Families, couples, friends – everyone’s excited. Kids were running around, parents were taking photos. A real sense of occasion.
After a few hours, Aino reappeared, her face glowing. She said it had been absolutely wonderful, that her family had loved it too, and that it was exactly the kind of unique New Zealand experience they were hoping for. She told me about how her young nieces and nephews had been utterly captivated by the hobbit holes, running from one to another, imagining they were real. She explained that her parents, who were visiting from Finland, had been particularly impressed by the attention to detail and the sheer lushness of the landscape, saying it reminded them of some parts of home but with a distinct, almost unreal, beauty.
She shared that it was these kinds of surprising, picturesque locations that made them want to travel to New Zealand. She mentioned that back in Finland, while beautiful, it was a different kind of nature – more forests and lakes, less of the dramatic rolling hills and unique volcanic features you find here. She also added that the mild December weather was a welcome change from the colder, darker Finnish winters they were used to.
Her family had even managed to get some fantastic photos, and she showed me a couple on her phone – one with a hobbit hole in the background, and another of her nieces and nephews beaming in front of the Green Dragon Inn. It was clear the visit had lived up to all expectations. She said that seeing the happiness on her family’s faces had made the whole trip worthwhile.
We made our way back to the car. As we pulled away from the movie set, I saw her take one last look back, a fond smile on her face. The drive back to Auckland was just as pleasant as the journey out. The golden hour was starting to paint the sky, casting long shadows across the fields. Aino was quieter now, perhaps a little tired from the excitement of the day, but content. She spoke a little more on the way back, sharing a few more anecdotes about her family’s holiday plans. She mentioned they were also planning a trip to Rotorua later in the week to see the geothermal activity, another iconic Kiwi experience.
She explained that her own visit to New Zealand had been extended because she’d decided to help her family with their travel arrangements and show them around some of her favourite spots. She’d lived here for several years now and had grown to love the lifestyle and the scenery. She appreciated the proximity to nature and the relaxed pace of life, which she found quite different from the more urban and structured environment in Finland.
As we neared Auckland, the lights of the city began to twinkle. She thanked me again, warmly, for the comfortable and reliable service. It’s always rewarding when you know you’ve played a small part in making someone’s special family visit a success. Dropping her back off in the city, she seemed relaxed and happy, already full of memories from her Hobbiton adventure. Just another day on the road, but a good one, helping people experience the magic of the North Island.
