Jet Park Hotel Auckland Airport to Whangārei private car — Hana's trip
By Harry, your driver
The August morning air was crisp as I pulled up to the Jet Park Hotel at Auckland Airport. Early start, always feels like a good sign for the day. The reception staff had given the heads-up, and sure enough, a gentleman approached, bags in hand. He introduced himself as Ahmad L. He was clearly heading north, judging by the direction we were headed.
He explained he was originally from Malaysia, but had been living in Auckland for a few years now. This trip to Whangārei wasn't for business, he clarified, but more of a personal exploration. He'd heard good things about the Northland region and wanted to see it for himself. Always satisfying to take someone to a part of the country they're keen to discover. The drive north out of Auckland can be a bit of a crawl, especially in the morning, but once we cleared the main centres and hit the open road, the miles started to eat themselves up. We passed through Warkworth, a town I know well, and then on towards Wellsford. I pointed out the turn-off for Goat Island Marine Reserve as we went past, mentioned it was a great spot for snorkeling if he ever found himself back this way with more time.
He seemed interested, asking a few questions about the best way to get there. I told him about the small walk down to the beach and how you could see a lot of marine life right off the shore. He mentioned he enjoyed the outdoors and nature, something he missed from his home country, though he said Malaysia had its own unique tropical beauty, of course. He spoke about the density of the rainforests there, the volcanic landscapes, and the vibrant food scene. It sounded a world away from the more temperate climes of Northland, but he was keen to appreciate the differences.
As we continued north, the landscape began to change. The rolling green hills became more pronounced, dotted with sheep and the occasional patch of bush. The air, already fresher than Auckland’s, seemed to get even cleaner as we drove further from the city. Ahmad commented on the vastness of the open spaces. He said Malaysia, particularly the areas he knew, was much more densely populated and that true quiet like this was harder to come by.
We chatted about the journey. He’d been travelling quite a bit for work before settling in Auckland, seeing various parts of New Zealand on business trips. He’d done the usual destinations – Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown – but had always intended to explore the further reaches of the North Island more thoroughly. Whangārei was the start of that personal mission.
I shared some of my own experiences driving these routes over the years. The subtle changes in vegetation as you move north, the way the coastline shapes the roads. I explained the local history of some of the small towns we passed, the stories behind their names or their founding. It’s easy to just see the scenery, but knowing a little bit of the context adds another layer to the experience, I think. He seemed to agree, appreciating the local flavour I was providing.
We talked about the different types of trees, the prevalence of ferns, and how the climate supported such lush growth. He particularly liked the pohutukawa trees, even though they weren't in bloom at that time of year. He'd seen pictures, he said, and found them beautiful. I told him he’d have to come back in December when they’re covered in bright red flowers – a real spectacle.
The approach to Whangārei itself is pleasant. The town sits in a basin, and you get some lovely views as you descend towards it. I asked him where he was staying and what his plans were for the day. He mentioned he had a room booked and was looking forward to exploring the town centre, perhaps visiting the harbour, and definitely seeing the Whangārei Falls. I recommended the falls, of course, describing how majestic they were, especially after a good rain. I also suggested a walk along the harbour if he had time, noting the vibrant atmosphere there.
He thanked me for the information, saying it was very helpful for planning his brief stay. He was keen to get settled and start his exploration straight away. As we neared his accommodation, he reflected on the drive. He found the journey itself to be quite scenic and relaxing, a good contrast to the hustle and bustle of city life. He appreciated the ease of the trip, being able to sit back and watch the landscape unfold without the stress of navigating. That’s what I aim for, really – a smooth, comfortable journey.
Pulling up to his hotel, I knew he was in for a good time in Whangārei. He had a genuine curiosity about the place, and Northland certainly has a lot to offer. He expressed his gratitude for the safe and comfortable ride, and for the little insights into the region I'd shared along the way. It’s always nice to feel like you’ve contributed to someone’s positive travel experience. He wished me well for the rest of my day, and I watched him head off, ready to discover the charm of the North. Driving back south, with the afternoon sun starting to dip, I felt that familiar sense of satisfaction that comes from a job well done and a passenger who’s had a good trip.
